.308 Based Cartridges Above 30 Caliber

I had great success with the 358 win this year at fairly close ranges. Just knocks deer down. That said, the cartridge starts running out of steam at 200 yds or so. That's where the Whelen or the Norma mag take over, but they're not.308 based. I like the .358 so much I'm buying a Whelen this weekend!

I just got my wife's 358Win home from my Gunsmith. Savage 110 action and Shaw barrel cut to 20 inches with a Shrewd muzzle brake. Can't wait for her to shoot it. Also just got a 338Federal barrel from a fellow member that is at my Gunsmith right now. Between the two I will be set.

45 raptor does some amazing things in the short range area.
One morning I woke up and googled .45-08 to see if it existed and came up with information about the .45 Raptor. Fast forward I built a .45 Raptor - Remington 700. My go to hunting rifle is a .270 but the .45 Raptor is my second favorite and my go to when hog hunting! With my .270 and anything smaller I always felt like the hogs would not bleed enough and if they ran at all - makes tracking difficult. The .45 looks like a golf ball passed through the hogs!

I really wanted to build a 45 Raptor, but the parts cost and the three extra pounds it would weigh in an AR10 as compared to a 450 Bushmaster in an AR15 put the kabosh on that. I've very happy with my 450 Bushmsaster, based on the 284 Winchester cartridge, even though the ballistic performance is a little less than 45 Raptor. Haven't hunted with it yet, though.

In the short 308 based cases for larger bore, I always liked the 358 varieties, for I can use 38/357 pistol bullets for shorter ranges, reduced loads for varmints using 110 and 125 grain, cast bullets and flexibility in a crisis pinch for bullets.
