.308 Based Cartridges Above 30 Caliber

My buddy has a .358 Winchester but it hasn't seen a lot of action. I have considered it because of its reputation and it would be fun to compare how they shoot the same load, velocities etc. Then I started looking at the bullet selection in different calibers for cartridges of that case volume and expected velocity and fell down the rabbit hole. The post on the .375-08 didn't help matters and now I'm on a mission.

So let's hear everyone's thoughts on the best .308 based short range deer cartridge above 30 caliber. I have read a few posts that got me thinking. 8mm-08, .338 Federal, .358 Winchester or .375-08?
358 win used one back east for a long time and every now and then still take it out for a hunt up here in Alaska

I'm think the .338 Federal and.358 Winchester would be the most practical. With the .338 federal having an edge on bullet selection and the .358 bullets having the edge on frontal diameter. Although I think 8mm bullets are generally designed for the lower velocities you would expect and it would be different. I don't own an 8mm anything but then I don't have any rifles or pistols in a .35 caliber bottle neck cartridge either.

ive always liked the idea of the fed and still want one. i think theyre neat and would be a great brush/short range gun.
plus if you already have 308 brass, neck up to a 338 and voila....338 fed.
