300 win mag vs 7mm rm

I hunt with a .300 Weatherby, so I don't have a dog in the fight. However, I hunt the Western US and have friends with fails of the 7MM on large Muleys and Elk. On the other hand, my Uncle has killed 150-200 Elk with one of his 3 .300 WM rifles.

It's really a toss up between the 2. The real key is to build the rifle so you can hand load long-heavy for caliber bullets to get the best long range performance. That's going to mean having about 3.7 inches in your magazine and having the chamber throated to put the bullet of your choice in the right place in the case when the ogive is in the lands. I would throat it so the bullet base is at or tiny bit ahead of the neck shoulder junction. This will allow I little more powder which translates into a little more velocity without hitting the pressure wall. A mag like the HS Precision DBM will give you plenty of room and provide reliable feeding.

If you choose and off the shelf rifle you will likely not have the right twist, throat, or long enough magazine. The factory 7rems are generally setup for 140-160gr bullets and the 300 WMs are setup for 165-200gr bullets. These bullets will not provide the best long range performance in these cartridges.

Bergara hmr 300 win mag
Sabatti saphire extended range 7mm rm

I live in Spain and here we do not have as many options of rifles and calibers as you.
In fact, the only option we have in 7mm rm and twist 1: 8 is this rifle

Now I have a 338 win mag, light weight hunting rifle. Also a bergara hmr 6.5 creedmoor.
I'm looking for something more forceful for long distance
I'm looking for something for more than 700 yards
Thanks everyone for your help

A 1:8 twist will handle a 180 Berger VLD or Hybrid not problem. You can also have a gun Smith touch the throat a little of a Bergara to give you room to breath.

the 1:8 in a 7 rem mad will shoot the 195 berger if you don't mind a 2800/2850 speed.

If you shoot solid coppers you can get them both moving 3100+

shooting both i do find my 7 RM to be more pleasant, putting a break on the 300 gets loud and you are burning roughly 15% more powder.

"Anything"? Not true. Can't shoot "MAN" bullets (200gn or heavier), LOL, :)

If you truly want to shoot a "MAN" bullet that performs way out there, LIGHTS OUT, go for a 338 Lapua Improved launching the 300 grainers.
If the .338 isn't big enough, you WILL BE surprised at how a .416 Rigby launching a hot load of 350 gr. TSXs will do at 750 yards (Don't laugh, this combo shoots as flat as the venerable 30-06, shooting the 165 grainers; but with 6000 lb-ft energy at the muzzle!!!)!!!

Now that one can get SUPER HEAVY 7mm missles (195 gr.), and you compare that to a heavy 30 caliber at 215 grains, there's not too much of a difference in my humble opinion. I sold a 300 Win Sendero to "upgrade" to a .338........and now I have a 1/8" twist 7mm Rem Mag to complement the 338 Allen Express.

I carry the .416 Rigby RSM for FUN.

Last time I checked the tech paper on the website a 1-8 twist in the 7rm will allow you to shoot a Hornady 180 eldm at an effective .818 bc in the 2900 velocity band.

1-9.25 stabilizes the 180 vld or the 180 eldm but the bc drops to about .675.... in my rig 2900 @ .675 keeps me supersonic at 1 mile and still allows me to dial a mile with my nsx without using sub-tensions. I'm currently shooting the vld, and it's like Thor's hammer on mule deer. I believe the Berger will give similar bc in 1-8 based on the conversation I had with a tech.

To be exact, the 7mm twist is 1: 8.25.
I don't know if that makes any difference in bc

Hi guys.
What caliber would you choose for long distance hunting?
-The 300 wm is with 26 "barrel and 1:10 twist. thinking of using 210-215gr bullets
-7mm rm, 26 barrel and 1: 8 twist. thinking 180gr bullets.

What speed can I expect from these calibers with these bullets?

regards
What game are you planning to shoot. If you are going after elk go 300. If only thing you are going after is whitetail size deer then go 7mm.

Man you opened up a can of worms on this question. LoL!!! I have a 7 mag Sendero and a 300 WM sendero. I bought a 300 WM cause everyone said it was so much better than a 7 Mag. Now my 300 WM just sits in the closet collecting dust. Hugh disappointment. For hunting purposes a 7 Mag can drop anything a 300 WM can with more accuracy and way less recoil. Now let the fun begin. LoL!!!

I watched this episode on TV back in the day. I have a 300 WM and 7 Mag both in Rem Sendero. My 300 WM is sitting in the closet collecting dust right next to my 6.5 Creedmoor. ( I use my 260 Rem the most but pull the 7 Mag out also for more energy if needed. ) just watch the video and at the end ask yourself this question. Do I even need a 300 WM?
