ok, when new barrel was put on the gunsmith did not give me any freebore, it had no jump. After I decipherEd the problem, he rebored to .0010 over a factory wby freebore for a 300 wby. In other words it's standard freebore for a 300 wby with .0010 added. He said it was 3/8" shallow beforehand. I'm not sure how many thousands he added but I do remember it came out to 3/8" that's why I asked because I could remember that. So, no freebore before, after reaming out deeper, .0010 over factory wby specs. You are correct. I don't think I am following you. Your original statement said " when I seated a 165 to the cannelure it would shove the bullet way deeper" This would have never happened with a true WBY freebore. How much jump do you have now? With 180 TSX, get 0.340" jump or more. Maybe I am measuring something wrong.
Thank you, absolutely correctHi problem was that originally there was no freebore. Once he discovered that, his smith reamed out to Weatherby specs plus an additional 0.0010". So, he originally had no freebore and his smith fixed that so that he now does.

Thank you, but I'm a die hard accubonds guy, I'll find the right comboBearman, FYI another user here runs 168 VLD's. Check the "Tell Me About the 300 WBY". That might work well for you. Good luck
I understand. I shoot them a lot as well, shoot 200 gr AB with RL22Thank you, but I'm a die hard accubonds guy, I'll find the right combo
My father and I use to run 7828 with 180 grain Bullets and it shot them very well. I presently don't remember the powder charge but I believe that we were pushing them up.Hello all, I posted a ways back about my Montana rifle that I had put a new Bartlien barrel on. I tried everything I could loads, primers, powder, bullet weight. I was in my reloading room when I chambered a bunch of loads with 165 hornady interlocks the flat base ones. They were seated to the cannelure and when I chamberEd them it pushed the bullet many many thousands deeper. I quickly called my gunsmith and said there was no freebore in my gun. He rethroated it to wby specs and added .0010ths more. I'm happy to say that was the problem. It's still a bit finicky though, loves 165 hornady and 84 gr R-19 powder....3 shots into 3/4" I know it will do better, I'll try more this winter....I'm on the right track now...it just needed some freebore. Btw, any good accuracy loads? I got about every powder, h-4831, r-22, 19, 25, IMR 7828, aa-3100, IMR 4350. Interested in mostly 165 grain, thanks guys!
Thanks, I actually just loaded a bunch with 7828 last night, I used 1/2 grain above the max 180 load, Ill try this week.My father and I use to run 7828 with 180 grain Bullets and it shot them very well. I presently don't remember the powder charge but I believe that we were pushing them up.
Great powder choice. With 180, mine likes it at 81gr. Let us know how it works outThanks, I actually just loaded a bunch with 7828 last night, I used 1/2 grain above the max 180 load, Ill try this week.
I have 4 factory rifles. Nothing done to them, spanning 60 years in vintage. 3 shoot 1/2" at 100 yards (could be improved with a better shooter) and one shoots 0.432" at 200 yards. More like 3/8" freebore. I guess I got lucky.I have chambered several Weatherby chamberings and have ordered all of the reamers with no freebore. I think you can experience both accuracy and velocity. Yes I know I cant shoot factory cartridges but I don't ever want to do that. It would be hard to find 338-378 factory loadings anyway. Or 30-378 with 125 grn bullets. At 4000 fps will shoot .2 or less. I think it is very difficult to shoot less than an inch when the bullet has to jump 250 thousands or more which has a tendency to deform or malutrate the bullet.
I will go and check to see if I can find my load. Thanks, I actually just loaded a bunch with 7828 last night, I used 1/2 grain above the max 180 load, Ill try this week.
I just checked and we were running 180 gr Bullets with 7828 Fed 215 primer and powder charge was 86 grains. If you could manage recoil it would shoot virtually through the same hole. But I didn't write down seating depth but every gun is its own animal. You might have to alter one way or another from there by powder charge or seating depth especially depending on what Bullets you try. Thanks, I actually just loaded a bunch with 7828 last night, I used 1/2 grain above the max 180 load, Ill try this week.
