My 7RM reamer is specially designed for the 180's. Its considerbly different than most guys reamers and especially factory chambers. I have built close to 70 of these with this reamer design and 26" barrels see right at 3000, 27" barrels will run in the 3020-40 range. The load is stout but not a max charge with this chambering. Norma brass is a little soft, so that is why Billy isn't quite seeing the full velocity. My personal 26" Rock barreled rifle runs 3020fps and has been verified out to 1500yds. The 7RM is a sleeper cartridge. With today's bullets and powders, its a completely different animal than it once was.

Im not sure of the weight somewhere around 10.5 lbs I think, I'll try and weigh it sometime. In reference to velocity I got this up to 3026 with 72.5 gr of retumbo but was noticing some flat primers but bolt lift was just fine. I was getting my best ES at 71.5 gr and 2962 fps (according to my chrono). I am using the softer norma brass vs the win brass. The batch of win brass I originally got was so bad I went to norma. After this batch of 100 norma go I may look at the winbrass again, maybe I just got a horrible batch.

Looks like the rifle is behaving well.

This rifle is just shooting every load I try very well. I've stopped using group size to try and pick a load and am just using ES. If I do my part it would shoot any load under .5 MOA. I shot another group at .337 CTC the first 2 shots went almost through the same hole, I honestly couldnt hardley tell it was but one hole.

How in the world are guys getting these kind of speeds with a 180 out of a 7 mag? I shoot a 162 amax with 69.5 gr of H1000 and getting only 2990 MV. My chrono says much faster, but my drop table at 600 yds says another story, which is the 2990. I'm shooting a 26 in Hart with a 9 twist.

I was skeptical at first as well but He assured me that I could accomplish these velocities. Travis hasn't dissapointed me at all. He was the perfect smith. I stopped by his shop 3 times or so and wasted hours of his time just talking. He let me handle some of his builds/personnal rifles and I spied him working on some customers builds, as I didnt want to disrupt him in the middle of his work just walking in and was waiting for him to hit a stopping point, and I have just been impressed with the whole expierence. I have gotten the velocities I was promised.

have owned both of these and still have the 300. my question is will the either barrells still have a throat left when you become proficent at the ranges you state you will be shooting.

Dang this thread just keeps going. I pulled my Sendero 7 Rum out for a back up this year.. took two shots at the 200y Bull, 1/2 inch to right and 3/4 inch apart at 2960fps. Nice to know it was still on and consistent should I need it.

85.5G Retumbo, 215m primers 2x fired Nosler brass.

About the velocity question, It might be a brass issue, the bullet grip and case change a little bit every time it is fired from the brass getting harder.

I have seen the 7SAUM with a 30" barrel and throated for the 180 bergers push the 180 grain bullet @ 3200 FPS with that kinda B.C. it's amazing, that would be my prefered set up for out to 1400 yards longer I am going to the 300 RUM with the 210's

Agreed, This is why I don't push the velocity or heat mine up. Hits just fine out past a mile. Only rifle I own that reaches out further is my 50, The rum very capable:) 200+ Rounds and counting.
The only regret is 12lbs 7 Rum Sendero vs my 9lbs 300 WM Sako I take hunting. A few pounds on a hike makes all the difference for a happy shoulder at the end of the day. This is why the Rum is my backup.

I shoot a 7mm and have killed many many elk. I shoot 168 burger, I have killed elk with 160 BT speer, 175 grand slam, 160 accubond. Head shot = 0 meat loss! I am ready to go to the 300 rum. I am considering buying from Cross Canyon Arms. I picked up one of there custom rifles and was shocked how light it is. I want one badly. $3,000 to $5,000 makes it difficult though. Well worth the price on a custom build.

Im glad I went with 7 RM. I got everything I was told I would get out of it. On my next barrel Im going to a 338 Edge I think though. Im on elk at over 750 yards and feel the energy would be useful as well as the wind cheating. I think the 300 RUM is an in between round and doesnt give you the best of either world. Not much energy gain and not quite as good wind cheating at long range(the 7 actually being better), also the barrel will last me a bit longer in the 338.

Being both a 7 RM and 300 RUM shooter, I would say that the 300 RUM offers a good bit more than the 7. It's true, when comparing the 300 to a 338 it is an in-between cartridge. You could compare a 338 to a 375 CT and say the 338 is also an in-between cartridge. The bottom line being that in most cases a 300 RUM can push a 230 gr bullet with higher BC at higher velocity than a 7 RM can push a 180. This means that the 300 Rum bullet is pulling away from the 7 RM bullet with 50 grains more mass and a larger diameter ALL the way down range. It will have a flatter trajectory, better wind buck, and a significantly greater terminal effect.

Then comparing the 300 RUM to the 338 EDGE, the 300 Rum will shoot a 230 gr bullet about 200 fps or so faster than a 338 EDGE will shoot a 300 bullet. Running the ballistics at say 3100 fps and 2900 fps respectively (from a 30" barrel) The wind correction is identical out to 1200 yds and @ 2000 yds the difference is 10 MOA vs 9.6 MOA. The 300 retains a flatter trajectory far past 2K. The 338 of course trumps the 300 in terminal effect at all ranges.

They are all good cartridges for what they are. They are what they are. As far as the 300 not giving you the best of both... it clearly bests the 7 RM in ALL category's. There is simply no comparison.

180 Berger 284 @3100 2000Y/3000ft Drop 70.4moa wind 11.7 504.5 Energy
210 Berger 308 @2900 2000Y/3000ft Drop 86.1moa wind 13.6 496.3 Energy

3000 Rum has edge under 1100Y on energy. Shooting a moose at 200Y...take the 300 but,....
7mm Rum has edge on windage/drop all the way through due to faster and slightly better BC.

I have shot the 7 Rum cleanly out to 1780 and can verify BC.

I will just add that I do think the 300 barrel will last longer, but for a few hunting shots every year , I will never wear it out.

Looking back I wish I had bought a 338 LM for LR. There are so many good reasons to buy one and the fact that it can reach out another 2-300Y past the rums with those huge BC's, is one of them. However I would not want to hunt with one...too heavy and gotta have a MB. The Rum truly is one of the largest usable hunting rifles IMO. How many other shoulder fired rifles contain up to 100G of powder?

For the price of a CT, I'd rather shoot my 50, that is just me. The 338 Guys were jealous of me hitting 2200Y and seeing the hits.....:D

This thread is about 300 RUM vs 7 RM. The 7 RUM is a different animal.

Comparing the 7 180 to the 308 210 isn't apples to apples. Apples to apples would be the 180 and the 230.

Also your velocity for the 210 is a little low. I get 3150 in my RUM. If we were to compare the 308 215 Hybrid to the 7 180 Hybrid the 215 has a G7 of .356 to the 7's .345 Typical velocities for the 7 and 300 for these bullets from these chambers would be similar which would give the 300 a slight ballistic edge over the 7 with a significant terminal edge. With the 230 hybrid, the ballistics would be similar with an even greater terminal edge. Bigger is bigger and when comparing apples to apples, bigger will come out on top of smaller.
