Well.... this morning was a disappointment. my group may or may not have opened up. I numbered the shots in this group so you can come to your own conclusion. I turned my rings around last night so I had to re bore site so I can possibly write shot #1 off as my scope adjustment settling, IF that is the case I dont really see an improvement if you are just looking at shots 2-5 but maybe someone else can see it in a different light? Let me know what you guys think.

I am considering a few different things.
1- Try the same seating depth again but tighten the action screws to 60 in lbs as advised by a friend
2- Try H-1000 or RL 25
3- Try a bullet with a different style ogive like a partition.
4- Throw the rifle in the river

I see a guy (venom600) says his rifle seems to dislike Retumbo but likes ramshot magnum. Has anyone tried it?

if you're open to shooting different bullet and powder, combinations I have done load development for 7 rem 700 300 rums using the 200 grain accubond an h 1000 with great results. all of them were factory guns witSh only trigger jobs. a couple of them had defensive edge brakes. 6 of them were easy and like somewhere between90 to 91.5 grains. the other 1 that was more difficult settled at 90 grains but I did have to change the action torque to get it where I wanted

Hi Mike, It appears your groups might be opening up, correct? I just skimmed the thread but you are using Solid coppe Barnes bullets right? I would sure think about a good bore scrubbing with BoreTech Eliminator. That new bore could easily be coppering up with solids.

Just a thought.

Is your rifle pillar bedded? If not, I personally wouldn't go over 40 in/lb on the action screws (personal max), in fact I don't exceed that on my bedded rifles.... I would be afraid to damage the wood. I'm in no way saying it wouldn't work, just sayin I've never had to...

Broz beat me to the Copper fouling part, with a new barrel, especially a factory bbl, they can foul VERY quickly with the Barnes due to softer material used. It will get better however, give'er the roto-rooter & try again, I use the Barnes CR-10, which works wonders for pullin copper out.

Ramshot Magnum is becoming one of my "Go To" powders, burn chart shows it right between Retumbo & H-1000. My 6-284 LOVES Magnum. If you throw it in the river, do it from the top of the mountain so I can pick it up down here! lol

I am not set on the 200LRX although it is my first choice, im open to what ever is accurate.

Broz, I already use boretech eliminator and im pretty confident its clean.

I decided I wouldnt take it any longer so I ran home and loaded 5 with 87 gr or RL 25 and went and shot it....results are disappointing to say the least. Again I moved my sights so I can possibly excuse shot number 1 from the equation (the bottom hole) even at that this is just as bad as the rest or worse.

I have some 168 bergers at home maybe I should try some of those see what happens maybe my gun just hates my bullets

Just my .02 cents:

220 SMK, 90 Gr. H1000, Fed Match 215, and OAL 3.6850. Rolls out just shy of 3000 FPS! I am under a half inch at 100yds 5-shot group!

Although I love SMK bullets dearly, I am looking for an elk thumper. The way I have it set up is with a zeiss rapid z 800 (800 max range) so I want a fast hard hitting well constructed hunting bullet. Hence the reason I chose the 200 LRX. I have my 338 shooting 300 SMK's at a slow 2750 FPS for long range im looking at this project as my mid range thumper.

dang, small world, my RUM loads w/300 SMK go out at an average of 2780! Don't give up on the LRX just yet, as you know, sometimes the loads come right in & sometimes they make you work for it.

What distance are you shooting your groups?

Maybe it's time for a 5 x 5... take 5 steps back & take 5 mins to re-evaluate.

All screws torqued correctly, bbl floated all the way.... sometimes we miss small yet important things.
Have you cleaned the firing pin, spring, bolt body (inside) etc? One of my buddies was having this problem with his 300RUM in a Sendero I, that thing was so freakin dirty you'd woulda thought it came out of a mud puddle....

I know you like the Barnes bullet, but try a different bullet to see what it does.

Sometimes you find a good combination by accident and it was not what you would have even considered in the first place.

I suggest giving Sierras a try as they seem to shoot pretty good no matter what.

I was dead set on using AccuBonds in my 300 RUM when I bought it but the stores were all sold out so I bought a box a Sierra 200gr GameKings. I was surprised at the performance. I wound up using that bullet for deer hunting last year and will again this year. I would not be afraid to use it on elk either after seeing its performance on a mule deer.

For powder I'm using Retumbo. I like it but recently got a can that is way hotter than the old ones. I have to rework the loads and plan to hit the range tomorrow. I want to stick with Retumbo but bought some Magnum to try. The 300 Rem Ultra Mag is my favorite round. I've stopped shooting my '06s.

im only shooting 100 yards so far. and I have been racking my brain trying to think of something I am over looking.

I am planning to try a different bullet just to see what it does if it will group with something else then that will be light at the end of the tunnel to me because I will know the rifle is capable. I have a few more powders to try though I am not giving up hope. there are lots of possibilities

the LRX is a TTSX. I called Barnes and they told me it was the same bullet new name. in fact I ordered 200 TTSX and was sent 200 LRX

I have thought about trying the 200 TSX though


Just called Barnes to ask the ttsx/lrx question again to see if I got the same answer from a different person and he said "same bullet, its just a marketing thing" HOWEVER some of the LRX bullets are new weight offerings but they are in essence still a TTSX by design.
