300 PRC

I was joking the last time I was at the mile range with a guy shooting a 300 PRC. My range gun is a 300WM 30" barrel with AICS mags. I load 77gr of RL-25 under 208gr Amax/ELDM. 3050fps with COAL of 3.6". I said I had a DIY 300 PRC. 😄

My answer to the question is I think the 300 PRC will fade as fad. The 6.5 PRC might last a little longer. I am using the WSM lineup as a basis. This is just my prediction. I could be wrong, because if I am never wrong I should be a millionaire with my fortune telling!
I'm in the camp that the 300WM will continue to fade even more than it has and the PRC will succeed. I have a 300WM and building a 300PRC but only time will tell.

I actually also believe that the 300 PRC will cause the Win mag to fade. It is similar to the win mag but its lower cost to manufacture having no belt and its also an inherently more accurate cartridge design, again no belt. It slightly edges out the 300 WM and is designed around shooting heavy for caliber bullets. 300PRC factory rifles are fitted with barrels that are twisted to shoot the heavies so again, a tick in the column for the 300 PRC. There really is no reason to keep the 300WM around anymore other than there are 10's of thousands of rifles in existence chambered for it.

Branches of the US military phasing out their 300WM rifles in favor of 300 PRC helps too.

IMHO, the main advantage to the 300 PRC relates to the SAMMI spec chamber and being able to seat longer, heavier bullets without losing valuable powder space and have room to manipulate distance off lands. Plus, factory ammo seated closer to many rifle lands. It's not that you cannot accomplish the same with 30 Nosler or 300 WM - you just need a custom chamber spec to take advantage of heavy-for-caliber bullets. Right or wrong?

It's the 245 or 250 that really show the separation. I like to think the prc only shines with heavy bullets and would struggle with light bullets. I shoot the 245 bergers and 250 Atips out of my prc . The 245's are at 2940fps and extremely accurate. I'd guess if I wanted to drop down for light recoil I'd be screwed with the freebore. But, as the solids continue to advance in performance, that could slow the fan fare of the win mag. But what the heck do I know

How did the 300 wsm have more going for it?
BTW, the 300 WSM is the only 30 cal that I own, and I disagree
I should have been more specific in the regards "More going for it" not as performance, but marketing, timing, alleged performance compared to the 300 WM. The WSMs were HOT back in the early-mid 2000s. Magnum velocities in short(er) action receivers. Powder column advantage of the bench rest style cartridges. Now, it turned out there were a lot of misnomers about the WSMs, but looking at the 300 PRC, the performance claims are not as pronounced, the timing of the debut is terrible, and in the end you can just shoot a heavier bullet seated longer. A long throated 300WM chamber is all that's needed to replicate 300 PRC from a 300 WM. 15yrs from now it will be like, "PR... what did you ask for?" 😄

What's this "clear advantage?" I'm getting PRC level performance out of my 300 WM right now.
I think the difference people talk about between 300 PRC and 300WM is comparing a factory rifle built by SAAMI spec.

Sure you can do a custom chamber job with a longer free bore on a 300 Win Mag, but you cant get that in an off the shelf rifle. The PRC is the fix for that specific issue with the longer free bore, etc.

I actually did get an off the shelf factory rifle, but its not the typical product. Savage 110 Elite Precision with MDT chassis, AICS mags, able to seat 3.6".

I'm a huge fan of the 300 wm, throated properly it's a fantastic cartridge and I have probably killed more elk with a 300 wm then anything else.

But the advantages of the PRC can't be denied, no belt, which is huge to me. Sure it's not a deal breaker by any means but it's completely pointless at this point. Being able to shoot the heavies in a sammi chamber without having to order a specific reamer and the longer neck just make for a better design.

I don't understand guys that have a weird love for a certain cartridge and defend it to the bitter end. It's not a living creature, it's a piece of brass with powder and a bullet in it.

As far as the PRC staying around, when Lapua has already jumped on making brass for it that should be a pretty good indication.
