30 Sherman Magnum 20” Build

Thank You. I really have not got to test with the suppressor much. My HTA Chameleon supp can not handle the 20" Bbl. So I bought a TB ultra 5 and Ultra 338 (pictured) that are in jail at my ffl's place. So if I want to shoot with them on I have to drive 5hrs to his location for now until my stamps come in. I have just shot a handful of groups at 100 yards with the ultra 5 and ultra 338. My rifle at 100 yards with the brake shoots .3-.5 3 shot groups usually the first 2 in the same hole then last shot opens up. I did notice with the suppressors on my groups were about the same size but the were in pretty symmetrical triangles vs 2 in one hole then one off to the side. Then again I don't put to much thought into accuracy testing at 100 yards with bigger .30s or .338s with heavy for caliber bullets. A lot of the time they will shoot .5" a 100 yards then hold that .5" group to 200 yards as well.

Thanks Rich, I would like to build another in the next year or so on a chey tac single shot action that way I can run a 1.450 shank for a heavy ELR setup. They do ELR shoots right down the road from me and I would like to get in on that myself. I'm thinking a Bartlein 400MODBB barrel with H-1000 would provide great accuracy and long barrel life.

Hey @CA48 have you loaded any 225 eldms with n570? I have a pile of both, no 215's as they've been unobtanium. I was going to have carbonSix spin up a 20" in 300prc so I didn't have to load for another rifle, but finding ammo the past few months has been challenging. Purchased some 300 prc brass and dies a month or so ago. Then I started reading more and more about Sherman's, read this thread last night, called carbonSix this morning and my barrel was going to get chambered today. Told them to stop and do a 30SM. Super stoked about this barrel!

re: "those dies we're borderline sizing enough so clickers were more likely. I had Hornady tighten them up another .0005" and they are perfect"

@elkaholic I purchased some Hornady 30 SM dies off eBay. Wondering if I ended up with old stock. Is there an easy way to check? Can I mic the inside and tell? Stock or run numbers?

Cheers,

You got black market dies that should have been thrown away.

I pressure tested some 124gr hammer hunters back in February but am just now getting around to posting it.

Never ran into any bolt lift but stopped there. Recoil feels pretty light after shooting 215s.

I have a little over 500 rounds through the barrel now. Been shooting 215s with the ultra 5 on exclusively lately with n570 and 215s, recoil is stout and it's pretty hard to spot shots in a 10.7lb setup. With Hornady 300 PRC 212 eld-x factory ammo it's not nearly as bad but also 200 fps slower.
When I was using my terminator t3 brake it's easy to spot shots but the blast/concussion on the shooter in my barrel length is pretty bad with that brake. I get a headache in 10 shots (Also it's entertaining to see the look on friends faces after shooting with that brake on). I've never noticed this with terminator brakes and longer barrels or even with shorter barrel rigs using different brakes. So I may try a Salmon River Ti pro or a beast brake instead. Although I'm thinking when I get the stamp for my 338 ultra can in Il just use that as I'm sure it will take a lot more recoil out than the ultra 5 does so Il be able to spot shots better. And I'm not knocking the ultra 5 it's great for a 9oz 5" lightweight can, just maybe not the best option for a lightweight 30 cal magnum.

If you don't mind my asking, why NT 0.001 and then 1/2 FCD? Compared to, say, NT 0.002?

I'm running a .334 bushing. It gives me 001-.0015" NT and that has worked well so far with the 215s so I have not changed it as that's what I will primarily shoot. I do have other bushings though that I've wanted to test but haven't yet.
As for the 1/2turn with the FCD that's just where I noticed it was starting to get a good crimp.

This was just a pressure test to see how fast I could push these bullets. If I was to do load development with this bullet I would test different bushing sizes, different crimp settings, and go with what shot best.

I have a 30sm with the following specs:
20" carbon six 1:8 twist 30 SM prefit
Bighorn origin LA
XLR Element
TBAC 338 ultra
Rifle has about 400 rounds on it. Sherman brass. 215 federal mag match primers.
VV N570 powder
Here are my max loads with each bullet before I start seeing ejector marks with n570.
225 eldm: 83.0 gr 2850 fps
212 eldx: 83.5 gr 2920 fps
214 HH: 82.5 gr 2942 fps
245 EOL: 81.0 gr 2743 fps
205 EOL: : 84.5 gr 2934* could of gone higher, no pressure yet will find higher load next time.

Work up your loads, your results may vary.

My WTX Mule deer that I took with a 225 ELDM. Center punched the shoulder at 360 yards, dropped in its tracks.

Did quite a bit of testing with these looking for a milder plinking load and never did get them to shoot even close to decent with imr7977, Il just save them for the 30/06 as it shoots them ok.

On the other hand I did get to scratch the .30cal itch.
