.30 GIBBS is finally ready ...

I have used for about 35 years a 338 GIBBS and found the 280 Rem drass the best to use. Can get 3000 with 200gr, 2965 with 210gr and 2865 with 225gr. Great rounds the GIBBS line you will enjoy it!

I've tried COW fireforming and it was pretty frustrating. It seemed like a simple idea, but the stuff was a mess. I failed at getting the case necks sealed off well with the toilet paper and had a couple cases dump that crap all inside my action. I also was expecting to be able shoot 100 rounds relatively quickly but man, the barrel got hot fast. How did your COW fireforming go?

Mine went extremely well, put 11g of WSF, filled it with COW to the neck area, and stuffed it with a cotton ball.

I've been shooting a 240 Gibbs for years. Had it built atound 15 years ago. Shoots 75gr vmax @ 3975. Only mistake was having a 1-12tw. I know this is a sidetrack but got all fuzzy feeling when someone says Gibbs, lol.

LOL! I know there are a few of you guys out there that love to remain low key with it.

" Gibbs cartridges " , what an excellent choice. Rocky Amonius Gibbs died of leukemia I believe, in1972 and unfortunately most of his last notes and load development were destroyed. Wolf publication's did a reprint of his work years ago. I don't know if it's still available. You probably already know all of this and I just put this out for others that might be helpful in searching out a new quest. I currently own 4 Gibbs. 25, 30, 2- 338's. Shot my Antelope, deer and Elk with my 25 last year. My 338 is actually my favorite Elk rifle. I sure hope you enjoy yours

Welcome to LRH and enjoy it! Any input to the Gibbs, esp. .30 Gibbs is a plus. Thanks!

I am curious about your twist rate as well as your free bore. I would love to see you try out the 215 and 245 Berger with max load of reloader 33. Or retumbo or H-1000 or 7828SSC.

With the wonderful powders we have today the Gibbs could do some wonderful things.I guess you can buy Gibbs brass, but it's not cheap if you can find it.

1:10 twist, I have the Kimber info right here from working on mine.

Sorry, I do not know what the actual free bore with the standard reamer. Perhaps somebody else might answer that question. The barrel has a 1:10" twist. I have 215s and 230s but not the 245s. I know I can stabilize the 215s and 230s esp at my altitude but I will save the 215s and heavier for more suitable chambering like my .300 WM/WSM (215s) and .30 LARA (215s, 230s, and 245s).

Aye Sir, see #26. Thanks!

your sizing method for your brass is good. However due to the two step in sizing you may have brass to seperate just above the base after a couple of firings.. my gibbs did this and my reloading engineer,. had some advice and that was to use 280 remington brass. tha extra 1mm in lenget solved the problem.. and my loading advice is 7% above the 30/06 loading. my 35 gibbs loves reloader 15.In the 30 ca. I would thingk reloader 22-25 Imr 7828 h-4831 h1000 and one of the powders from Miles city Montana. like magnum . I just cannot tell you the powder for the 30 gibbs . I believe you can get 2950 with a 180 however. it will I am sure = the 30 WSM. another thing for reloading data you can use the P O Ackley data for the 30 Brown Whelen which is what you have I have that in a 375 and my fired brass in the gibb works good the the Brown whelen.
But be careful with P O's loading data powder today is not the same as what he used. anyway you will firn the right load and you have a beautiful rifle. the best thing about the gibbs is light on recoil because of the 35% sholder.and you have an extra round in your rifle.
