30-06 that could

Custom 1962 30-06 I built off of my grandfathers original rifle. 23.5" plus muzzle break Bartlein barrel. I'm pushing 181gr Hammer Hunters at 3000 fps with Reloder 17. With fantastic accuracy. A lot of the data out there is only loaded to around 50-55k psi for older rifle purposes. Once you safely load to its full potential you are right there in Magnum territory.View attachment 402503View attachment 402503
Beautiful specimen!

My very first deer rifle, actually my first rifle was a Remington 742 below custom deluxe 30-06. That would have been 1972 fresh out of high school. I just started reloading and was putting 52.9grs of 760 Winchester ball powder under a Hornady 180gr spire point. I was tapping the bullet in with a plastic mallet. Don't laugh, the rest of you old Coots did it too! It was a dang good load and i made my first long rane shot with that rifle and load at 3 tenths of a mile at least that's what my buddies old gmc pick-up odometer said it was! I must adimit I used a lot of Kentucky windage holding about 6ft over that deer but I centered the left front shoulder dropping that deer in its tracks. I recovered the bullet under the skin on the opposite shoulder which I still have. Boy, those were the days.

I have a Garand and a Browning A Bolt in my safe. Garand for the nostalgia and the A Bolt for my Go-To hunting rifle. I've taken Elk, several Mule deer, whitetail deer and antelope with it. Sierra 165 gr SBT Gamekings with IMR 4350 powder. Shoots consistent Mickey Mouse patterns at 100 yds. Good shot placement and they're DRT!

@DCBenn88

What was your starting load with the 181 HH and and RL-17. I may build another 30-06 dedicated for monos only projectiles. Have a handful of boxes of monos, Afterburners, TTSX, and HH to play with.

Here's my wife's 6x6 she got with her Tika 06. She took him at 369 yards extreme up hill shot.
Wow now this is constructive criticism it has happened on more than one occasion in this country in the bush and I am sure that it has happened in your country too carrying antlers out of the bush like that will get you shot there is always some clown willing to put a bullet through a shrub because they see an antler

I watched 'Alaska Last Frontier' and the women went in bear country to guard the herd. Jane showed her -06 with 180gr bullets. They sighted a large bear and she fired 3 shots to scare the bear. Did not seem to bother it much. I was thinking they might want to have something a little bigger if they want to keep all the calves.

I was watching her one time shooting on the show a couple years ago. I could tell before she shot that she was going to get scoped in the eye and I told the wife sitting next to me. Sure enough she did with her first shot! LOL

Good catch but the picture was a staged one. Actually had the horns covered in orange cloth for that reason

Had to pull these 2 rifles out, the one on the right I put together in mid 90's using a MKX Interarms action and an E.R.Shaw bbl. The semi- inletted stock was completely unfinished on the outside actually kinda looked like a rifle stock with a hole in it.I used the brochure showing a finished stock as a guide. A lot of sweat and long hours I finally managed to accomplish this. The master blue finish and the 25kt gold trigger was done by Checkmate. Wood is #5 extra fancy grade the rifle is .308. The rifle on the left is the last 30-06 I own. Bought it from a good friend. Don't know it's history but it's an older Interarms action if you can see the button safety in front of the trigger guard. The stock is exhibition grade .both stocks are Claro fiddle walnut. I gave 06's to my grandkids this pair will go to my son one day.

Wow. Thats some fine work! Love that classic look.

The super fast loads for heavy bullets is cool... But it does seem it requires a 26-28" barrel. You can get more velocity out of any cartridge with more barrel length.

This really does have me interested in what my 30-284ai might do in a 28" barrel. I'm very comfortably getting 2800fps from a 185jugg and 55.5gr h4350 out of a 24" barrel. There's room to spare in the case and at least 1.5gr off max. I know it ain't the '06... But was inspired by the '06 and the medium length action that I like to use.

I'm really interested in what the '06 can do in the more commonly available 22-24" barrel. What velocities are people seeing with 200-215gr bullets out of those barrel lengths and what powder is getting them there?
I'm not shooting anything that heavy but I get 2900 with a 185 VLD using N560, 24" barrel.
