28n, 7rum, 7stw decisions (7rm falls far behind)

7 rum if you got the tube, but it's a fair criticism that it's tough stuff the fun bullets in it and still stuff a few down.

The 7 stw is a long one, can't imagine what the looong modern bullets would do other than make single shot.

Before the the wuflu I bumbled on to a prefit 28 nosler for a bargain about the same time as a couple outfits blew out factory dusty 28 nosler ammo for. Was looking to trade down a bit on my short flame thrower 7 rum. Only had it for a few hundred rounds but could never get book loads to match nosler factory ammo speeds. Passed it off to a friend to play with and he shot it the rest out. Don't think it was a full 800 and done, although closer to a prs shooting pace.

Couple observations.... first is man I wish powder was still 2019 prices it's near 3x in 5 years for the fum powders. Second is, I'm lousy with shot string hygiene... but 1000 from a rum is a pipe dream for me. Maybe from the nosler with a better barrel steel.... maybe.

Have 7 RUM, 7 stw, and 7 Rem mag. Have a bunch of other 7mm but slower, as in 7 08, 7x57, 7x64 7x65R etc. Never had a 28 Nosler. I am a big fan of 7mm, just about the perfect combo of light to heavy bullets, excellent B.C. and great terminal performance.

None of your choices are realistically a 1000 round barrel rifle unless you shoot them very, VERY slowly and clean often. The 7 rem mag is about the top end of 1000+ rounds out of a barrel. If I was going to shoot it a lot at targets ot steel, I would do the 7 rem mag. For long distance hunting the 7 RUM is my pick. Easy to make brass from the 300 RUM. STW is great, but I would not do one now unless I could get my hands on 300 new cases.

My 7stw finally showed potential after I switched to N570 and Berger 195's. Same powder and bullet the Nosler 28 loves. The issue is that it burns hot. I burned .100" out of the throat in 350 shots, using a chamber chiller after almost every one. It really came to life after burning that throat away as I could then move the bullet boat tail up past the case neck jct. Problem is, that bullet location is a short term deal with the hot powder. After this barrel, I'm stepping down to the 7prc. Same bullet and powder, but only about 67 gr instead of 81.

I wouldn't do an STW unless you have brass.
Natchez has brass for 7stw from nosler and hornady in stock right now. Usually at least one site has it available as far as I knew, was there issues outside of 2020 getting it?

Edit: well that didn't take long lol, now it's out of stock xD

Second edit: 7stw nosler brass is in stock on nosler's website as of the time of this edit. Nosler is usually pretty good about having some available on their site. No guarantees itll last but I bet they won't stop making it. Niche rounds for a premium price is right up nosler's alley, I don't suspect they'll stop making it any time soon.

going by 3 choices, which could possible have longer throat life to give you more rounds before replacing the consumable? i know it varies, but would all give within the same amount of rounds?

i like the 28n due to case being shorter when using cip mags (3.850) to seat bullet out further.

the 7rum (to me) has a slight disadvantage over the 7stw as capacity being the culprit (not necessarily a bad thing)

7stw having close to the same case volume as the 28n has me on the possible choice?

those who has shot 1 or more of these cartridges weigh in your experience(s).

wouldn't all 3 be a "barrel burner" of less than 1k or 800 rounds? i don't want to try and get a 4"+ mag necessarily as action work will be needed(?). just trying to decide on or if i would add another 7 to my only 2 i have so far (7-08rem & 7saum). the 7rm doesn't give much more power than the 7saum is why the inquiry.
All are burners. The 28 will be the easiest to feed by far. Stw has major brass shortage issues. Adg makes the 28 and rum, with the 28 being more popular. The rum has way more *** in the tank, but should probably have a 30" barrel to capture the powder. For a 26" barrel, i think the 28 is the way to go.

28 Nosler would be my personal choice! ADG & Peterson brass offerings and not far behind the RUM. Happy medium of the cartridges mentioned.

I happen to have one for sale that I'd make ya a great deal on if interested too! Can include case, brass, loaded ammo etc...

I do not have the the stw or rum, but I do have the nosler and rem mag. My load for the rem mag is 175 partition running 2850-2860 in a 26" tube. Shoots really well. 28 nosler shoots 175 eol bergers at 3140 and really good as well. I almost bought the rum but struggled locating parts for hand loads. So that's why I went to the nosler.

gets me leaning towards the 28n also. thought i found 8rm for brass earlier, but no.

28 Nosler, love them! Hod rod cartridges are like top fuel dragsters, they are fun, go fast, and both eat large amounts of hot burning fuel that breaks parts. Personally Im good with it, I like the performance.

I tried the 7PRC earlier this year after building a few for others. I tried it, (knowing in the back of my mind I probably wouldn't like it) didn't like it, and pulled the barrel off, put it in the lathe and reamed it to 28 Nosler. All is good now.

28 Nosler, throat erosion be damned. Go for it all! 195 bergers in CIP length! I also am not a big fan of belts. The 7 RUM is a possibility too since UM has brass in stock I think. You going to figure out a way to put it in an AR? There are a few companies doing long action ARs.

no, not the long action cartridges, just the short mags. however, there are a few out there that offer 28n in an ar platform along with 26 and 30n (33n maybe).

Is this a hunting rifle or a plinking rifle?

I believe you are not a hunter, so maybe step down to the 7RM/PRC. You are only dialing. I rented a hand reamer for my 7RM and created more freebore. Was able to load the 190 LRHT out pretty good. Got 2835 FPS with N570 and 3070 FPS with Pixie26...That will hang with the powder/barrel burning cartridges you mentioned.

But hey I get wanting the big ones. I burned out a 300 RUM barrel shooting at 100 yards the last three years....
