.284 Winchester?

Add me to the long action crowd..... In a short action the 284 is weak sauce with the heavier 180 class bullets.

Now switch to a long action with a 28" barrel and the right freebore, you will have a very accurate long range capable rifle IMO.

A .284 on a short action comes with a lot of compromises. If you are committed to using a short action, I suggest that you look at the 7 SAUM as its better than the .284 out of a short action. If you are willing to go with a long action then go with whatever tickles your fancy.

If I build a gun with it, I would make it a 26 inch barrel. I wish I could stuff that bullet in there but if you think it's too much maybe I should decide on something else
if you want a 800 or below gun for hunting, take look at and talk to Steve at hammer bullets about the 143 hammer hunter. it will be an eye opener. they arent cheap but for hunting they sure perform. a 150 barnes ttsx may be good choice also.

7mm08 GREAT caliber for Deer/Bear/Elk within limited range. We had several and especially two, almost new, in Rem 700 Mountain DM great wood and sold to young hunters for their first real rifle. Sorry to this day that we (I, me) sold them.
284 Winchester was and still is one of the BEST cartridges for shooting 1K competition! Thousands of Records!

Check this out. Might be what you looking for. I have a 284 in a bighorn long action and its a shooter! But my overall length is 3.205.

You might get by with the 168 gr bergers though.

long action...make life easy and go 280 it'll feed like a champ

but, me thinks this fella has a short action

I never realized you could get these velocities out of a 284 Win. These are 7RM velocities. I get 120s to go 3400 and 140s to go 3150 from a 7RM 24" tube, and that's what I see some of you guys posting for the 284. 284 velocities on the chart below from wiki.
