280AI or 7mm Remington Mag?

is it by auction or raffle you might just let the winner decide
Glen, you sound like a Ducks Unlimited fund raiser. Great ideas all. But the best is to have a big boob woman carry a representation of the quality of the build (rifle) around the room during the auction, after a 30 minute open bar with no food!

I think the 280ai is cooler but the 7rm has much more factory ammo support.

Go with the Ackley, it has about the same ammo support as the following cartridges (according to what is available on Midway USA).

7mm STW
7mm Remington Ultra Magnum
28 Nosler
6mm Remington
26 Nosler
6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum
7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum
300 Savage

I've been involved with du and nwtf but mainly cancer benefits and there are probably more items to be auction off

I'm building a rifle to donate as a fundraiser to the folks at Yellowstone Bible Camp. I have a 7mm barrel Remington long action and long action McMillan stock. I'm trying to decide on caliber, which would you rather have? I think the 280ai is cooler but the 7rm has much more factory ammo support. The goal is to raise money for the camp so I guess the question is which do you think would appeal to more folks?

I was going to say 7mm Rem Mag when I saw the title because if you're a handloader, you can load it down to 280 power easily or out pace the 280 AI be a significant margin - and if you're NOT a handloader, then still the 7mm Mag because ammo is quite common vs non-existent with the 280 AI except through handloading or mail order. HOWERVER, when I read it was for a raffle, you will DEFINITELY want the 280 AI. The "cool" factor you mention is what you want to attract interest and sell more chances. Some people will shy away from the recoil they are afraid of that will be generated by the 7 Mag. I've heard this conversation time and again over the years. I think the 280 AI will be the best option for a raffle to raise interest in the benefit. I am personally still intrigued by custom models in the AI from makers like Cooper, even though I would choose to build a 7 Mag, the 280 AI has the "instant gratification impulse" factor, and I'm more likely to impulse buy a 280 AI vs a 7 Mag if I see the right presentation. Something about it being more "rare" makes it more desirable. And it can be used by teens and ladies more readily than the "Big 7." Just my $0.02...

I recommend the 7mm Rem Mag, you don't know who will get it and what if they dont reload?

The 7mm Rem Mag has tons of ammo options available.

Offer each of them with a box of Nosler Custom ammo. That sweetens the deal and eliminates worries over lack of ammo for the AI. But if you offer it for one, you have to for both.

If it was for me It would be a 280ai, in-fact I was going to build a 280ai for myself with these parts until I heard about the fundraiser. The audience will be mostly Montana residents as the camp is in Montana just south of Livingston. Lots of elk hunters and ranchers in the bunch. I don't know how many are long range hunters or reloaders. I will not be present for the fundraiser but I can talk to the organizer and ask to do a raffle instead. In that case I suppose they could sell tickets all over not just at the event. In that case Itll probably be the 280ai because of the cool factor.

I'm with the others here. Give the options and let the winner decide. Just have to set some boundaries. Very cool idea. Let us know when you get it going.

7mm rem mag. Slap a decent muzzle break on it publish the recoil with a shot group and call it good. Most people at a fundraising auction will over bid just to help out.
Knives I've done in the past that I didn't think we're going high enough I actually bid myself won them and then raffled it back off so they made over double.

I have had both for a while now and have decided to sell my 7rm and keep the 280ai for a couple of reasons, the 280ai is easier on brass and it is a lighter rifle.

"If" it ends up to be a raffle and it makes it here in LRH, I would be more than happy to help out for the good cause. I am sure others will do the same. Again, good on you and God bless.
