280AI Loads

My 280ai likes h4831sc. RL26 was ok too, but it showed pressure signs really fast. One grn of powder higher went from no signs to soot around the primer. I would work up slow with RL26. I shoot 168 vld's and 175 elite hunters in mine. I want to try some RL23 if I ever get the time to.

1st question, what brass are you loading, 280 Rem or 280 Ackley?
2nd question, what is IMR 4155?
Sorry went off memory it was 4451

I am using Nosler brass but have fire formed 280 brass in past using IMR4895. Would like to try some of the newer powders but like all of us having trouble finding it.

I've done the same thing firforming 280 Rem brass with mid range load for a 280 Rem

I have plenty of 4831 and it has been a good performer in my 280AI. I hunt with the rifle alot so until things loosen up I will stick with the 4831. That said some of these new powders are not as heat sensitive.

H4831 is an extreme powder and very tolerant to temp changes. Great powder. Just lacks speed with the heavier bullets.

I use a medium load of 4895,140 grain bullets and seat them out to the lands. It's easier just to buy the nosler brass. Recently I bought some Peterson brass, looks good, you may try that if they make it in 280AI. I think they do. I built my rifle when it was still a wild cat so I was forced to fire form my brass from 280 Rem.

Peterson makes 280 AI brass and it's excellent. Just can't find it in stock right now.

If I had to choose from your powder choices with a 140 NAB in Ackley formed brass, assuming straight SAAMI chamber and round, my start loads would be:

1. RL-26 - 61.5-62.0
2. 4955 - 55.5-56.0
3. 4350 - -53.0-53.5
4. 4155 (ha,ha 4451) - 50.0-50.5

The RL-26 will be the dick ripper of the bunch, it would be my 1st choice.

Feed back the data as you develop, all info is good.

DONT! use this data for fire forming 280 Rem brass.

Is you rifle chamber SAAMI?

I found 50 pieces of Nosler Brass that should arrive tomorrow. I also found some factory ammo so i bought 2 boxes of that also.

I've been hoping to see the peterson brass back in stock soon as i would like to get some
