280 AI with Hornady 162ELD-X load data?

I thought it wouldn't get enough powder in but it does great. I use the max load listed in hodgdon reloding website. Haven't had pressure in any of them yet.
Thanks for the info, I need to pick up some Retumbo to try in my 300 rum anyway do Ill try some in the 280AI.
Here's the data Scooter,

All Remington FF brass and F210M primers.

150 BT 58.5 IMR-4831@ 3.370"

160 TSX FB 56.0 RL-22@ 3.300". Which BTW is at the lands in my gun.

175 NPT 59.0 IMR-7828@ 3.280"

I don't remember how far off the lands two Nosler bullets are? They were developed 17 years ago except the 160 TSX which I believe was in 2004, but when Barnes first brought them out.

Hope that helps?

Thanks for the data longrange, I've got those powders at home, Ill have to pick
up some bullets to try.
Thanks guys!

Well....went to the range today with the eld-x sitting at the riflings. First 2 shots touching at 100. The 3rd shot 1in low. Hmm..well maybe I pulled that one....I thought. 2nd 3 shot group was about 1-1/2in.
I had 3 or 4 rounds in my box with the Sierra 140gr GK.So just for kicks I shot a 3 shot group with these. Quick measure is right around 1/2in.
I think I may need to bow out with the 162gr eld-x. I really wanted them to shoot well.....oh well I guess.

I had the same problem with RL26 and 162 e-ldx couldn't get rid of a flier switched to RL23 and it shoots lights out. I used RL 22 before in 2-280AI's with 140's but RL23 is faster and just as accurate with 140's and 162 that I have loaded for. In past experience when I get a flier I switch powders.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll see if I can maybe find some around here. I don't recall seein it on the shelves on the stores I frequent.

Shot the LH Forbes 280 AI 24" 1-9 twist

Loads worked up in my rifle do not try them without working up.

Would like to see similar loads and velocities please.

280 AI (SAMMI) 24 "
RL 26 Peterson Brass, 160 NAB, CCI 200, 60.5 gr 2935 FPS, 61 GR 3003 FPS 60 GR 160 GR N partition 2982 FPS all under 1.5"

RL 26 RP brass, CCI 200 162 GR A max 61 GR 2952 FPS 61.5 GR 3001 FPS about 2" does not like the 162 Gr A Max

Mag Pro RP brass, CCI 200 162 Gr Amax 62 GR 2882 FPS 62.5 GR 2856 FPS 63 Gr 2880 about 2"

RL 19 RP brass, CCI 200 162 Gr A max 58 GR, 2859 FPS, 58.5 2885 FPS, 2895 FPS

H 4831 Peterson Brass, CCI 200, 160 GR Nosler ABond, 57.5 GR 2769FPS, 58 GR 2808 FPS, 58.5 GR 2865 too hot shows pressure. Around 1"

Peterson brass is quite a bit heavier than RP brass. Nosler load data shows about 3000 FPS tops with 160 GR bullets in there 26" so about 2950 is my
safe max in my 24".

Supply on my 160 GR Nosler Accubond is out more on order. My rifle does not like the 162 A max box states 1-8 twist but accurate in my 1-9 7 Rem Mag.

Shot rifle again best load is Peterson brass, CCI 200 primer, 60 GR RL 26, 160 GR Nosler Accubond,
3.275" OAL under 1".

RL 26 has less felt recoil and more speed than the other powders, but it's tricky does not show pressure.

Any xtra 160 GR Nosler Accubond,s I am looking for around 200, seconds are fine.

There data has 3 powders at 3045 with 160-168 class bullets and none with RL23 or 26.
In my testing between 22 vrs 23, 23 was 40 fps faster than 22 in 3 -280AI.
8 grain difference in weight is gonna account for 40 fps

IMR 7828 demands a Fed 210 primer with tiny groups, very close to the max load for the rifle, bullet seated .010 off the lands, sort bullets by ogive length with the 162's.

R#26 has a very particular "like" on the primer choice where one will be like crap and the next primer will be small group....work with the choices you have on hand.

Here's my most accurate load.

H4831SC, 58.7, Hornady SST, 162 grain, .030 off the lands (3.310 COAL), Nosler brass, Federal 210 primers, 8-shot chrono test, ES 20, SD 6.3, average velocity 2824fps, 316 moa,

I have another load for 162 ELDX with 58.8 of H4831SC that shoots .415 moa.

I'm trying to find some Peterson brass, so I'll do some load development with that if I ever locate any. The Savage Ultralight in 280 AI is pretty easy to develop accurate loads for.

Miller1,

When I was working on this cartridge with the AMAX version, top honors for velocity and accuracy went to Norma MRP and VVN-560. However, H4831sc and IMR7828ssc were nearly as fast but lacking a tiny bit in accuracy by comparison.

The interesting combination though was H4350 and then H-Hybrid 100V. The 4350 ran well but the case was not completely full as you would suspect being a slightly faster powder. The 100V on the other hand, being a cooler burning powder, ran about 100 fps slower but will not erode the throat as fast as the other more active powders.

This work was all done in a very serious long range hunting version of a tactical rifle. No factory information was every tested.

Regards.
I realize this is a very old post but looking for any info on VV N560 for 162 pill in 280 Ackley. Curious if you can recall the charge range, I'm looking for starting point.
