270 WSM or 27 Nosler build for 170 Bergers

I have a 270/26 Nosler built with a 26 in bartlein barrel throated for the 170 Berger on surgeon action. If efficiency is a concern the 270 wsm is a better choice if not I'd go with 27 Nosler.

If your looking to maximize the 27 Nosler in my opinion your better off forming brass from other manufacturers not name nosler. With an average velocity of 3200 I could only get a few firings out of the case before getting to loose of primer pockets. Once I started forming brass from bertram I now have 4 firing with no loose primer pockets at 3250. I've not gone any higher due to getting good case life with a great groupings. Although I'm sure I'm pretty close to top end.

Now that adg is going to make 7mm lrm brass for gunwerks, I think it'd be a great case to neck to 277, I already have bushing dies. I think it'd be about 87gr capacy, so smack in the middle of wsm & nosler case, 3200 fps should be attainable. My 8 twist carbon barrel is on order, probably need to get that reamer ordered too!

I shoot a 270 WSM on a long action. I built it specifically for the 170. I can assure you 3000 is not close to the top end for speed. I hit 3200 easy enough. Settled in at 3150.
I have no experience with the nosler, I am sure it can hit 3k easy as well.
the 170 is a killer for sure, and it is easy enough to work up loads for.
Ialso have a Sherman 6.5 short that can sniff these speeds with 156's. So good luck!

With the 170 eol seated above the donut area of the case(neck/shoulder junction) minimum length is 3.06" there aren't many short actions that would feed that case without being chopped.up a fair bit to fit special mag boxes, bolt stops, and what not. The perfect action for a wsm loaded long is a Tikka long action as it's only 3.4"

Split the differnce and go 270 wby ,My 26" bbl 270 wby will do 3000 fps with 170 eol but only tried a few loads as I dont't have the proper twist for them but i had to try them.
