I must of mis-understood your question. You are shooting Short Mags in a long action and I agreed with you that I was also shooting a long action...
No hijack...the OP was asking what the OP could do with a SA...sounds like a longer mag box and some throating is the way to go...
Well, it was JUST short of 3000 with a 21" so 3100 easily with a 26".That is such an angry little package. For a short barrel pack gun, a 170 at 3100 is unreal! Well done, Rich.
Not too privey on merged threads
10-4. What terminal ballistics have you encountered with the 170 at high velocities?
View attachment 91867 270 WSM M70 of mine uses 170 Bergers with an OAL of 3.115 and is 0.015 off lands. Can see how it compares with your 3.0 magazine. Had to lengthen the magazine about 0.100 to easily accommodate the OAL. Using 67gr Retumbo the accuracy node is at 3050 but it can easily be pushed to 3100. A great shooting higher SD 270 bullet using 1:8 twist, 26" barrel to deliver 1,000 lb energy out to 1300 yards or so. I think you should still be able to get 3000 or more even setting the reamer back another 0.100 to fit your magazine length.
I'll visit with my smith about setting the lands back. Has anyone shot the 170's with ±.100 jump?
Great info guys. I'm going to dig in to the Sherman a bit.
Regarding throating for the 170's with standard magazine, how will affect seating depth/OAL if I want to shoot 130-140's?
What modifications can be made to extend mag past 3.000? Any short actions a little longer than 3.000"? Maybe a medium action? I'd really like to stick with SA as this is a lightweight build.
