270 Win loaded with 130gr Hornady SST

If my memory serves me correctly IMR 4064 is the powder for the 270WCF and replaced it's original powder 1015 to Dupont 15 1/2 to IMR 4064. H4831 gives the highest velocity

I have a Kimber 270 win. Loads so far and both 3/4 in @100 yards
1) 55 grains/IMR 4350/130/NP COL 3.20
2) 55 grains/IMR 4350/130/SST COL 3.25 shoots 1 inch higher
if you don't mind me asking what is your COL? I want to try putting a load together using 58 Grains /H 4831/130 SST and have measured the magazine which will only take up to 3.32 COL. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's always safest to go to the reloading manuals for load data as all chambers and throats are different and what's safe in one guy can be catastrophically unsafe in another.

Hornady I'm sure has good data on their site so I'd start there and with IMR's load data.

H4831 is one of those powders that you probably can't get too much of in a 270 win case. The maximum SAMMI pressure is 65,000 psi. Hogdon states in their data that 60 grains will create 59,000 psi. It is definitely a compressed charge as it is basically all you can fit in a case without deformation. Lee manual says 60 grains will get to 63,000 psi.

I have found in 270 win and 260 rem that H4831 likes to be compressed. A drop tube is your friend when loading charges like this. In any case you probably can't get enough H4831 in a 270win case to go over 65kpsi with a 130 grain bullet.

If you don't like compressed charges that's fine. There's plenty of powder that work in the 270win.

Good luck and shoot straight y'all

Thanks for the intel i will have to find the best COL. The magazine for my Kimber can't go past 3.32 i measured this last night so i will have to find what works. Thanks again

I will give it a try i will have to find the Sweet spot when it comes to the COL. Thanks
I've found the nosler bt bullets not super sensitive to seating depth. I set to mag length and shoot it. I don't have the time or patience to perform seating depth tests find every .10"of accuracy. I rarely use the 270 past 350 yards in Pennsylvania. So I sight in 2" high at 100 and hold right on from 25 yards to 300 yards. Zero brain required point and squeeze the trigger

That's funny you say that because my COL using 130NP is 3.20. I will be using the 130 SST for Elk. Due to my shoulder problem i might not be able to use my 300 Win mag any more. Thanks for the response

I would use the nosler partition or accubond for elk. The sst and bt can expand to quickly and blow up at close ranges especially at 3000 FPS. I would shoot the 140-150 accubond for elk or the partition. When I decide on a elk hunt I'm taking my 338 win mag with 200 grain accubonds.

I have been using 165 Grain NP for many years now and have taken Moose/Elk/Bear/Deer/Caribou. If it wasn't for my shoulder issue i would be using my 300 win mag for Elk. Unfortunately i can't find any 140 Accubond right now. But i appreciate the intel on the expatiation of the SST. Thanks again

I'm sure someone has 10,000 accubonds in their basement and could spare a few. Hell maybe give up a pound of powder out of the 55 gallon drum of h4831 in the garage….🤣🤣
