270 weatherby mag: light or heavy bullet?

hey, trckymsft, we meet again. i don't have any load dev. for my 270B yet, it's a mark V accumark. it shot 1.5-1.75" 100 yd groups with factory weatherby 130/140 ammo. it shoots the weatherby 150sp .75" at 200yds, all day long!! i love the gun, don't think i can improve of the accuracy, so haven't tried. if you come across something good, pls let me know..

I really like the round, but think I'd like it better in 6.5 or even 7mm due to the better bullet selection alone. But it's good enough for anything I'd be shooting at. I'm sorta stuck between the rock and the hard place right now waiting on some powder to hit the shelves!

my 1:10 twist brux barrel 270 wby mag is showing lots of promise with the 165gr matrix using H1000 and federal 215m primers. I am new to reloading with no mentor to guide me , so load development has been a slow process as there is no load info for that bullet.. hope this helps
Hello, new to the forum(first post actually). Was curious how this load turned out? I am looking to try this exact load in my .270 Weatherby Mag Accumark. Was looking to start about 65 grains of H1000 and go from there. I know this is an old subject, but was hoping someone might chime in with some experience with the Matrix bullets in a .270 Bee.
Thank You.... Jay

It's probably best to start your own fresh thread, people will read the date and not bother reading your post.

I have a custom switch barrel Win Model 70 with a 26" 270 Weatherby barrel, never used Matrix bullets, so no help there.
Mine really loves 150's out of it, even factory 150gr Spire Points shoot into sub MoA.

Cheers.

Do you have a chronograph and how long have you been reloading?

I do have a Magnetospeed and have been loading for this rifle since the late 90's. Most of my reloading is on smaller varmint calibers though. I have taken many deer/elk with this .270 Weatherby with mostly Barnes bullets. I recently developed a great load with 140 Accubonds and IMR 7828 (3325 fps) that were sub moa @ 800 yards. Unfortunately, I have a wondering eye for a sleeker higher BC bullet, the Matrix bullet seems to get great reviews. Figured I would give them a crack.... Closest starting load data is for the 160 partitions(nothing for H1000 tho)

Good...:)

Load your 165s to mag length which is around 3.39" COAL...

65 grains of H1000 is really light...start around 70 grains and go up...

Best accuracy with 7828SC was 69.5 gr @ 3115 fps with the 165 Matrix...

With a stock Wby 270 barrel you should hit a node around 3115 fps.

Again, this was my (stock) barrel...now it sports a 28", 1-9 barrel...

Hope this helps...

Thnx Longtooth,
Just what I am looking for to get started... 3 powders I was looking to try were IMR 7828, H1000 and N560. Hoping it likes the 7828(I have 12lbs. of it, lol). Have heard good things about H1000 tho. Bullets should be here any day, will let you know how it goes. Thnx again! Jay

Let us know how it works for you...start low...:)

You can push them hard enough to uncork the jacket, I can do it with my 270 WSM and 140 Bergers if I push them past 3300 fps and the 270 does not have any Target versions.
I use 140 vld classic hunters at 3408fps in my 270 wby and have never seen them " uncork the jacket " and it shoots less than have MOA to 900 yards

I shoot 140 AB at 3450 fps out of a 26" Lilja barrel with 7828 for the past 6 years. During load work it shot better and better as pressure increased. Velocity is amazing and pressure signs are moderate. This combo has taken 3 bull elk, couple cow elk and a few deer, 2 of the elk and 1 deer were beyond 600 yards. I have a hand full of recovered bullets and they all look as you would expect. A friend made a finishing timber shot on a bull elk in the shoulder at 40 yards a couple weeks ago. I was amazed the bullet held together and performed well at such a high velocity. Rib cage had a baseball size entrance and exit and the bullet was under the hide of the far shoulder. The bull made another couple steps and was down. I have two different boxes of heavier and sexier bullets I've been planning on switching to but I can't justify it while this combo keeps doing exactly what I want it to do.

Finally made it out to try the 165 Matrix Bullets in my .270 Weatherby Mag(factory Accumark). Thank you Longtooth for the help on this... I did start low and worked my way up with both IMR 7828 and H1000 powders. I will find max load in my rifle when the weather is a little warmer(was about 35-40 degrees today). I think there is a little more velocity to be found but I do like what I am seeing so far... Sub Moa was easily obtainable. Will try to upload a couple targets. 1-10" didn't seem to have any issues with stabilizing the very long bullets.
(DATA IS FOR MY RIFLE ONLY, START LOW AND WORK UP SLOWLY IN YOURS)

Tried the 165 Matrix at 525 and 725 yards, think they are going to work just fine, 2.5" groups at both distances! I settled at 3000fps to get the most life out of my new brass. Thank you Longtooth and everyone for all of the help and suggestions.
Round target (525 yards)
Square target (725 yards)
