They are not too shabby. I am pushing the 175 Matrix VLDs at 2996 FPS (I have gotten to nearly 3100 FPS out of my 30" Lilja 3G 1:8" barrel, but the group opens up and pressure starts showing up) with 58g of H4831SC. If I do my part, it is .5-.75 MOA at 966 Yards. With a 200Y zero at my altitude, it's 1862 FPS/1348 FT-LBS at 1000Y. People are reporting ~100 FPS more velocity with RL26.

It's a great cartridge, I don't understand the reason it hasn't caught on with other shooters?? The cartridge is flat shooting and not difficult to find a good load for. It's easy on the shoulder and the purse strings. $4.48 for one piece of brass and it's "out of stock " is the reason I went with the .270AI instead of the .280 AI. Do the research and you will find there is a small following. Our builds were for whitetail hunting, if you want to shoot heavyweights go with the 1:8 twist barrel. I'm happy with the 150gr bullets

Been following ,lots of ways to make the 270's perform, many great ideas and posts, thank you all 😆that's what makes this forum so great the Fantastic members and their input, cheers 🍾🍾🍾

I clearly understand your logic. Using standard 270Win brass and fire forming in a 1:8 twist barrel able to stabilize high BC copper bullets, i can see that the 270AI could run with the 7mms

I really like the way the rounds look in your photo. You have excellent accuracy to close to 1000 yds. I like the longer neck as well. You got me thinking about making one. I've got a long action ARC action I could use. Whose reamer did you use and could you send me the throat dimensions? We were discussing yesterday designing a very high BC 150 gr copper Bulldozer hunting/target bullet that will run in a 1:7 twist barrel.

George,

It was my gunsmith's (David Young) reamer. I can ask him for the throat dimensions and will get back to you as soon as I get the information.

Awesome! Thanks. Been looking for a barrel mler that will make a 1:7 twist .277 barrel.
I am sure there are more, but X-caliber and Preferred barrels make 1:7" 5R, and McGowen and CarbonSix also make 1:7." I have an X-caliber in .26 cal 1:7" 5R and McGowen .25 cal 1:7" and they have been a shooter. I have the CarbonSix in .33 cal 1:8" but have not shot it yet.

Thanks for that info. I was looking st McGowan. Did not know that Preferred made them. Have to look at CarbonSix. Again, really appreciate the info. We should have some info on the bullet design in a week or two.

RL26 is by far the magic pixie dust for the .270Win and heavier bullets. I found it to be accurate and velocities quite a bit faster than expected. Plenty of thread discussion on it. RL26 unlocks the overbore potential of .270Win IMO. The other means to "unlock" the .270 Win is use the longest action (~700LA) to maximize the COAL which the long neck of the case excels at holding long bullets. This also helps to increase case capacity. Whether you go with .270 Win or .270AI, the overall performance is increased significantly over a SAAMI .270Win. when you max out the cartridge's capability.

Long action magazine ~COAL 3.6"+
Added Freebore to accommodate longer high BC bullets
1:7-1:8 twist
RL26 pixie dust
156HH, 170EOL, 140BD2

Be prepared to be surprised.

FYI - Preferred Barrel did my barrel and from my perspective nailed it. I sent them 2 dummy rounds of 156HH set to 3.63 COAL and stated CBTO with 0.020 jump to allow me accommodate other longer bullets. Barrel ordered was 27" Light Palma SS Remage, 0.290 freebore, 5R, 1:8tw. Couldn't be happier with results.

That's great information. I'm glad to see that Preferred did so well for you. They seem to have the shortest lead time and I have a 338 barrel from them. I think I will go with the AI. It makes a lot of sense given the availability of . 270 Win brass and the ease of fire forming. We plan producing the highest BC bullet in the 145-150 gr range. We are lready close with the 140 SBD2. All it takes is t lengthen the shank a bit.
