260 Rem Load Recipeies?

SargeSniper: I just looked back at my records because the older I get the worse my memory seems to be.

I picked mine up off a used gun rack in OCT 2009. That means I am off on how long I have been using my load. I used it for every deer season since I bought the gun, so, in the interest of full disclosure, I will now say, I have been using this load for 6 years now.

I am now also unsure of the year of manufacture. I may just call Remington. It is the BDL Mountain Rifle, gloss finish stock and deep blue metal work with the detachable box magazine. Is has the 22" spaghetti barrel and is a real joy to carry.

I do not think there were a lot of these made (or they are just hard to find) because people keep trying to buy it from me.

I purchased mine in 1980 for a Colorado Elk and Mule deer hunt. Mine is in .280 Remington. Same as yours but with a hinged floor plate. It shoots the 160 gr Nos. Partition 3/4" at 100. Recoil is stout with the Goodyear butt pad due to the 7 1/2 # weight. A pleasure to carry but kicks the snot out of you when you shoot it.

Don't feel like you are the only one with memory trouble. I have a severe case of CRS myself. It goes with Grey hair and thin skin.

Wish I knew how to put one of those smile things on here. I am carrying a medicare card so that gives an age estimate. My wife keeps my skin from getting too thin, but, the grey hair is all white.

Have a good fall hunt and you might give the 760 a try in the .260 rem. I like it a lot. I know some creed shooters that like it as well.

Just my 2 cents.
thanks rch

If you need to substitute 760, H-414 is the same. Mine likes H-4831sc so much I don't see a change in the near future. It will shoot quite well @ 300 with it. I will keep it in mind though.

Have been a card carrying member for 10 yrs. myself.

Same story with me and the 760 and the 130 AB. I have an 8lb jug so, it will be my primary for a while. Back when I was working up a load for this gun, I did try the 4831SC. I have no note as to why I moved on. I think somebody sent me to the 760. I know I went through a couple of different bullets till I found one the gun liked. All good here.

Pretty much the same here with SC powder. Other bullets shot well but the Scenar was the one that stood out in the field. I will get it out to 400 when the rain stops and things dry out a bit. We are shooting on land that is in the swamp so it may be a while. Mud is called "Black Jack Gumbo" in the swamp. The farmers say if you stick with it all summer it will stick to you all winter! It's like glue when it dries.

Keep the H-414 in mind if you ever run low on 760.

I just started working with a .300 Win. and found out it ain't your normal.260 or .308! Those two spoiled me.

SARGESNIPER, I thought you might get a kick out of the fact I just about finished a workup for my "other" 260 using 4831-SC. I am at 46.5 gr with a 142 SMK (yes, it is a long range paper puncher). It has a 26" 8-twist barrel and really likes the 4831-SC for the 142's. I could get plenty of velocity with the 760, I just couldn't get it to settle in.

I am now the proud owner of 6 lbs of 4831-SC. It was this thread that pointed me back. I had an old partial bottle and an old full bottle and just mixed them together so I would have one consistent lot. It started good and tightened right up at 46.5. Velocity is about 2900 and ES is in the sixes.

Thanks for sending in that direction. NOTE: I still have not messed with my Mountain Rifle 760 load. It is just really good with that skinny barrel and twist.

all for now. rch

Good to hear you got a handle on it. Mine shoots 46.0 gr. under the 139 Lapua.

I'm currently using 140gr Hybrid, Lapua brass, Wolf LR, and 46.5grs H4831SC or H4831. Avg speed 2800 fps with 24" barrel, with low ES/SD. Been using this load for almost 2 years. Shoots outstanding with H4831.

2800 is fantastic from a 24" bbl. Have you tried the Hybrid Target on a game animal? If so how was performance?

I'm impressed with H4831 and 140's. I have a bunch of H4350, but never tested it with 140's.

I've shot one coyote and a small buck @ 315 yards. Coyote was DRT, and the buck went 20 yards and folded. They seem to expand well.

I guess there's no doubt that 140 Hybrid really stops a coyote. 315 on a whitetail is great did the 140 hybrid penetrate the deer at that range. H4831SC has been my favorite with 120's and 140's as well.

Hunted with the 120 NBT this year accuracy with it has always been stellar. Game performance on deer sized game is excellent. Not to many DRT but they don't travel far.

Meant to shoot a few with the 120 tsx this year but my hunting area has changed and most of my deer were harvested with shotgun and 22 hornet this year.

Need to try the hybrid target. Have you tried any other primers than wolf? My best groups have been with Rem 9.5 and Federal 210M CCI BR2 has been good as well. So primers don't seem to have a great impact on 260 rem and H4831.

Good luck and shoot straight

Bob

The buck did not give me a broad side shot. It was facing me heading down a hill feeding to some brush. I waited for 15 minutes, and would not turn. So I took a chest shot and it cam out right before his rear leg. Insides vitals were blown up. not much blood shot either. To me it did the job and will continue to use them.
