Small Caliber Shootout : Which one do you prefer and why ?

I am a hunter. I say this first because there is a difference between a Hunting shooter and a Competition shooter. I want to make it clear that I am not a competition shooter. That way I can avoid confusion by having to deal with those people who are never satisfied with the accuracy of the gun, no matter how precise.

I have hunted for 40 years from the Arctic to the Amazon. I have shot many hunting rifles. I have been successful with all of them. But my preferred caliber is the .243. It has the power and accuracy to accomplish just about everything a good hunting rifle should. In my experience, it is the most accurate caliber for hunting right out of the box. I have never shot a .243 that could not shoot sub MOA at 100 yards with little effort (with the right ammo of course). I have killed more than 100 large game animals with the .243 in my 40 years of hunting at up to 300 yards. It has never taken more than one shot and I have never pulled the trigger on an animal with a .243 and that I have not killed and recovered the animal I was shooting at. Not once.

I have never had the chance to shoot the 6mm creedmore, so I can't comment on it. Like every other rifle, it will probably do just fine for hunting. As far as hunting goes, the .243 is a tried and true round and I really don't see the need in the market for the 6mm Creedmore, since it is practically the same exact round.

I think there are just too many people with engineering degrees trying to make a name for themselves by reinventing the wheel and giving it another name. .243 or 6mm Creedmore. Six of one, half a dozen of another. Both provide about the same ballistic performance and hit what you are aiming at.

In my mind it's a really easy choice. I'll take a 243 Win over a 6 CM all day long.

Advantages of 243 Win:
Tiny touch faster.
Way more availability
A gazillion pet loads
Factory ammo available EVERYWHERE
Equally accurate
No case forming required
Lapua brass available
More factory rifle choices available

6 CM advantages:
Pretty much equal performance
Other advantages all in your head

Now, if you wanted to open up your options, you could consider the 6BR, the 6PPC, and a plethora of other smaller sweeter 6's.
When my best friend died of cancer I inherited his Sako L579 in .243 . The heaviest bullet I've put thru it.is 80 gr. I understand it has a 1" in 10" twist. I was told it can handle up till 100grs. I've always thought that brass/bullets were more readily available because it's been around so much longer . Now, I'm gonna start experimenting with it and see which load is the most accurate. I kind've age with your assessment. I already purchased a 6.5 CM and truth be told I'm kind've disappointed--- not the gun's fault . Since my .243 has sentimental value I think I'll stick with that and my 6.5 CM .

I have an RPR in 6CM and I've never owned a .243 Win. That said, for a rig primarily used for hunting I'd go with the .243 Win solely due to round availability. Obviously for a Precision/PRS rifle I'd go 6CM.

i have both. 243 in the bolt and 6mm creed in the ar-10 platform. reason for the creed in the ar-10 is that it feeds better.

I have a 243W XP-100 with a shot out barrel. When I get around to replacing the barrel, it's likely going to be a 6 Creedmoor.

I like the case design better on the Creed.

I'm debating on whether to go with this Rifle in .243 Win.

I too am mainly a hunter. I don't target shoot unless it's to check loads which I do often. Don't know if that means I'm a target shooter . Does that make sense ? I don't know... ? I had a Rem. 700 BDL in 6mm Rem. that I loved. One of my first rifles . I'm not sure but I think it had a 1 in 9 twist. Was in mid 70's. I sold it...
Had a Win. Mod. 70 in 243 that my x father in law gave me. It was a shooter. Sold it. Needed cash.... far as 243 the only one I have now is a TC 28 in. Encore Hunter barrel. Not a shooter like the 2 bolt guns tho. The only animal I've ever shot with a 243/6mm was an antelope buck with the Win. and a coyote with the Rem. My son shot on buck deer with the TC. I'm more of a 30 cal./7mm hunter and lately 6.5 also. There's my history with 243/6mm.

Just get yourself a ruger American predator in both calibers, shoot them and then decide and sale the one you don't want! If you shop around you can prolly find a good deal and have two guns close to the price of either of them ones lol

I have an .243 win model 70 for a long time now. I hand load 80gr. Nos ballistic tips and love the instant death on deer and hogs. What I love about the .243 is that I can find ammo anywhere in the USA with ease and with a quick sight in back in action back on the hunt. I have bought a 26" 1:9 3 grove SS I will put on it and load up to the 108's mabey 115's. But with what I have found at 500 yards and less it still has enough practical energy to effectively kill so my thinking is why change it up for a few yards and be ammo shorted. The .243 has lasted this long there is an old saying if it ain't broke don't fix it.

What do you plan on using the rifle for? Those are two vastly different options and would have vastly different reasons for me wanting to own one.

I bought an Encore after a buddy recommended it to me. I planned on getting into pistol hunting, but quickly realized I didn't care for it. It makes a great ML now, and I have a .204 Ruger barrel for it. It hasn't had the .204 barrel on it since I made it a ML.

I wouldn't recommend an Encore to anyone who doesn't need one for legal reasons, like my buddy. He lived in NY and owning pistols was a PITA, so the Contender/Encore platform allowed him a lot of flexibility since shotgun, pistol, or ML was the only choices he had for hunting. The reason I don't recommend them is you can usually pick up a complete rifle for about the same money as a barrel for an Encore.

In my mind it's a really easy choice. I'll take a 243 Win over a 6 CM all day long.

Advantages of 243 Win:
Tiny touch faster. <- this is irrelevant unless you are talking 100-150fps+
Way more availability <- as long as all you want to do is shoot light varmint bullets or 100gr softpoints
A gazillion pet loads <- why does this matter?
Factory ammo available EVERYWHERE <- again, as long as all you want to do is shoot light varmint bullets or 100gr softpoints
Equally accurate <- ok?
No case forming required <- 6 Creed is a SAAMI Spec cartridge, and doesnt require fire forming
Lapua brass available <- 6 Creed does too
More factory rifle choices available <- and almost all of them have too slow of a twist rate to stabilize the heavy high BC bullets people are shooting now

I'm leaning towards the TC Encore in .243 because all of the different caliber barrels available and it has a 28" heavy barrel , I will be using it primarily as a Benchrest Target Rifle
