240gr. Mk seating in 300WSM?

I have a Savage 16FHSS in 300WSM, Short Action. I am planing on putting a 30inch Hart barrel in (1" in 9" twist)but, right now it just has the stock 24inch barrel. I want to run 240grain Matchkings in Norma brass. So my question is will these fit? I don't care if they fit in the magazine or not, I can direct load them. But, will they stay of the lands, or will I have to seat them in to far to get enough power? I am new to reloading. I just want the best long range performance I can get from my 300wsm, and have heard very good things about these bullets, mainly running in 300WM though. Let me know what you guys think!

i'm not gonna tell you a WSM can't shoot the 240's, obviously it will. but i don't think you'll get enough velocity to make it a long range performer. a bullet in the 190 to 210 range is what most use. just get it throated for the shortest bullet you might use when you rebarrel.

This may be a stupid question, but how come in factory loads the 300wsm has more velocity, but for handloading you can get more velocity from the 300wm? Are the 300win mags just under-powdered from the factory?

Look at the 210 Berger or Sierra MatchKing. There are guys in the 1000 yards bench rest comps shooting these bullets between 2900 to 3000fps out of 30" barrels. If you set your rifle up correctly, I bet you could get those velocties. Send BountyHunter a post and he might be able to help you out. Also, try Vhit N550 powder. This powder will help get you a little more velocity compared to regular powders, and with less pressure. Check this powder out, I will be using it in my on 300WSM.

The WSM's factory loads are loaded to about 62,000 PSI a bit more pressure than the 300 Win is loaded to. Reloading manuels usally load both to the same pressure and then the 300 Win is faster, because it holds more powder

Not to be a nag, but it's pretty gutsy recommending a powder you've never used and have no personal experience with. You are right that N550 will give you more velocity, but you are dead wrong on why it will. N550 is a triple based powder with a high nitroglycerin content. It holds peak pressures longer and flame temperatures are higher. It is famous for giving accelerated throat wear. I used it exclusively in one of my guns and the throat was fried in under 1000 rounds. Extreme care was taken with this barrel and it should have easily gone another 50% before giving up the accuracy ghost. All "5" series powders have this trait.

It's also pretty gutsy telling your rifle what it will like before your gun is built. Usually, the gun tells YOU what it wants. Your banking on the biggest unknown in firearms.

BTW, not "jumping on you" just because you're you. I just correct the wrongs when I see 'em.

Thanks for the info! I am hoping to target shoot out to 1,700yds, and hunt out to 1,200 or more if possible?(if I do my part) Do you think this is a realistic goal or am I crazy? I have a Remington 710 .270win that shoots .50MOA groups with store bought Sierra Gamekings. I am planning on reloading for this rifle to. The .270 will be my main rifle for shots under 1,000yds, so the 300wsm will be mainly used for really long shots or big game.gun)

Coming from a 300 WM reloader - you might want to check out bullets around the 200 grain mark. I have a couple boxes of the 240gr Sierra Matchkings, and they are tight shooting bullets - but they don't hunt worth a darn. But it is to be expected since they are a Match bullet. The big craze right now is the Hornady 208gr AMax - it is lighting the 30 cal up. It shoots great, hunts good for thin skinned game, and is in that sweet spot for the small Magnums and the standard 30 cals.

What is the BC. of the 208gr. Amax, compared to the 210gr. Berger? Remember, I am looking for the BEST long range accuracy capable from the 300wsm. The main goal of this gun is to see what the 300wsm is capable of. Hunting is second on my goal chart. I know that the 240gr. Matchkings have the highest BC availible in .308 bullet size, so thats why I was looking at it. I don't care if my barrel doesn't last forever,(all safety intended!)I just want to see what a 300wsm can do at extreme long range, and find its limit.

my 210 berger loads will not fit in my SA Frontier rifle, but they work very well in my LA 700 PSS. Shoot 210's, my current load is getting 2900 fps out of a 24" barrel. the COAL is 2.98".
