220 Swift Using Faster Twist Barrel vs 22CM

I keep reading discussions about how modern 22 cartridges like the 22 Creedmoor, outperform the older cartridges like the 22-250 & 220 Swift. The comparisons are never "apples to apples" though. They all compare the older cartridges shooting, for example, 50gr bullets through a 1:12 twist to the modern cartridges shooting 75gr-90gr bullets through a 1:8 twist.

So what happens if you build a 220 Swift with a 1:8 twist and shoot 75-90gr bullets? How would that compare with the 22 CM?

They never compare apples to apples, they need to push the new cartridge with the fancy new name. The Swift has as much case capacity as the CM so if everything else is equal they would be about identical in performance along with the 22-250 AI. Brass quality does favor the newer cartridges however. When my two Swifts need a barrel, it will be the 8 twist.

What happens:

You potentially run out of room in the mag box with longer bullets
You still have to use that semi-rimmed case that doesn't feed all that well
And you still get to deal with case-stretch and cracked necks

Other than that, the case capacity is very close to the 22Creed and so the velocity between the 2 would be very close.

There's no magic in the head stamp on the brass...
Case capacities as measured by Layne Simpson for a recent article on the fast twist 220 Swift.
22 Creedmoor - 49.3
22-250 - 44.3
22-250 imp - 50.2
220 Swift - 49.1
Case capacities in grains of water of the case filled with water.
220 swift AI, 55gr? Don't have enough hair for a man bun, so I'll stick with the swift!

If you change to a 220 AI swift, and probable increase the case capacities. The other is I generally have rifles built in long actions. That stops a lot of problems from the get go.
I looked up again in my Sierra manual. They had changed to 1-12 twist rate, 24" barrel length. Slowed the 55gr down a lot. That;s what I generally use in my 220 Swift, and I purchased it in the early 70's. It's on a Mauser 98 action.

Do you think that there is much difference in the velocity between the 12 & 14 twist?
Not arguing, just curious? I have a Swift in both, different barrel lengths though.
I think the 220 IMP would be a real performer, I just wish someone like Lapua would make a run of Swift cases.
