CO unit suggestion

I've got about 9 or 10 points (iirc) and I'm looking for a unit with higher probability of filling tag for next year.
No guided hunts, can't afford that. I like to park an rv trailer for a base camp, then can use atv and walk in for spike camp too.

Anyone have a decent area they would like to suggest for public land? Not expecting anyone to give up their honey hole. I live east of Colorado springs, I'd like something within 4 hours or so but will consider any/all co suggestions

Uggh the creep is so bad in CO I have basically decided to just keep getting points until something changes or one day I'll be that old timer who can barely walk with the 27 point tag.

My buddy's are masters of the gohunt app. The only units we can draw with 12 points are units we could have statistically drawn 3-4 times over the last 12 years. The units get harder to draw but the hunting stays the same or gets worse. Its a hard pill to swallow to waste 10 points on tags you could have drawn 5 years ago with 5 and 5 years before that with 5 as well. Gohunt helps a bit with odds and gives good descriptions of units that help you decide if there's enough access for your style of hunting. Keep us posted, we are considering burning points on archery hunts because of the creep.

Just rifle?
Archery or muzzle?

Any particular season? Just Deer? White tail? Mule deer?

According to the CPW everyone has an 18% chance of success…not great odds IMO. Since it appears you are a resident, you have a lot more options of success. JMO&E I would get another preference point and buy an OTC tag in an area you want to keep hunting in the future. Knowing any area well increases your chances. As someone has asked what season do you plan to hunt? This is another important question dealing with when the elk will likely be high or low.
I had some out-of-state buds who had a unique highly successful hunt. A landowner closed off access to some BLM land they had ATVed to for a couple of years, so the 4 of them hired a helicopter to take them in and out. That year they got 4 decent bulls!
The further you can get from roads, the higher your potential. There's always the guy who sits around camp every day that some stupid bull walks up and says shoot me, but these are the ones you read about. So everyone wants the same luck.
Find an area you can camp during the summer or early fall to start learning the game patterns. If you hunt late seasons you research mid to lower areas. If you hunt early seasons, particularly. bow and muzzleloading, but also early rifle, research higher areas around timberline.
Best of luck in your pursuit!

southpa- yes,-- I hate burning points on a 2 or 3 point area with too many people and little chance of filling my tag ---ill look at gohunt

Dfa- mule deer, white tail is pretty much otc-- i prefer rifle, but I have a decent set up for ml, and I used to bow hunt so I could pull out the old bow and start practicing again- but my old bow limits were 50-60 yards, my ml limits are 150-200 but my self imposed rifle limits are 6-700y so I'd have a better chance with rifle as long as there deer are still there. As far as season 1st seems to be elk only, so 2nd is probably best for me, though I've done 3rd for elk but stayed in a buddies cabin- it can get pretty darn cold in CO during 3/4th season at hunting altitudes once the snow hits

Ridgewalker- I've been gathering points for a while while hunting elk, but there are no otc tags for mule deer in the state -- i know getting away from roads helps that why I set the base camp rv then atv or walk in to hunting areas--- my problem with "early season scouting" has been that once hunting season starts, the animals move-- it seems like preseason scouting doesn't work in high pressure areas and having only 2 weeks off per year (using a week for hunting)- doesn't allow for much scouting anyway

I have on-x, and utilized the cpw mapping website in the past, I also get the cpw hunting stats and use them-- I'll take a look at gohunt too

That's like me trying to find a good place to hunt pronghorns on your side of of Eisenhower tunnel. I live in the northwest corner and the first season will be your best bet. GMU 11,12,23,24,22,21. Still a lot of private land here but a lot of BLM and forest

Some stats then if you want a "good chance"

Those are antlerless stats.
25 and 45 second season is not antlerless. Just 78 and that was my bad I mixed up something else I was doing and intended to post 44. The rest is the lower end of "a good chance." Not that it was specified or anything in the OP either way.
