Predation has always had a factor, (lots of wolves and Cougars) but the main reason for such numbers this year is the extremely cold spring that East Idaho had. Spring Green up was almost 3 weeks late, we had record snow packs that indicated that the winter was harsh in the mountains as well.
All things combined led to the starvation of most of the fawns. And a good portion of the adult deer. I would guess that This last season I saw 1/3 or less deer that I saw last year. I didn't even see a mature buck. I did finally see one the day after the season closed.
There was a tremendous amount of pressure this year which probablly led to the big bucks going nocturnal. Remember I hunt an area where I see Several monsters a season, if just only a glimpse.
I'm hopeing for a better year next year, but I'm still concerned.
