17 remington savage

AL- l had feeding issues with my first Savage last year. A17HMR. Twas a real dog too, WITH fleas. Sold/gave it to my Son. He thinks its cool in Stainless with laminated thumbhole stock. He won't shoot it. Just looks at it. I too cured my Savage problem with a CZ457 Varmint in walnut from Midway. l then stumbled upon an MTR CZ457 22LR. With SKS SV Standard ammo in my MTR l can bang away on a 3'' swinger @200yds with ease. A CZ will cure all your 'Savage Ills'
Took my two CZ's 457's to the range yesterday. Wanted to shoot at the 200 yard target but the range was full up. So since I made the drive I elected to shoot Groups at 50 yards, the .22 Cal 457 MTR using NORMA TAC pretty much 5 shots in one hole. Then I went to the HMR .17 and used the CCI GAMEPOINT shot three groups and can cover with a Quarter. Last group tried the A-17 ammo. I think a little tighter group.
I LOVE MY CZ's

Long story short, I started fresh and came to the conclusion the front of the mag was seated too far i n the stock as the rounds were not touching the feed ramp. I made 3 shims to go around the narrow end of the mag catch. I also grabbed an UNMOLESTED magazine and threw them in. I saw improvement. Threw in the second shim and as long as I worked the bolt fast it fed. S till not enough contact on the feed ramp. Made another shim from a brake line washer than ended up being perfect. It feeds fast or slow. Bending the feed lips was NOT the answer yet so many people throughout my research and conversations assured me that was the solution so I chased that problem. A problem that wasnt there. Finally I have a functioning rifle! Thank you to all those who offered suggestions and showed interest in helping me with this project. Im hoping to make it my new calling rifle.

Great ending to the story. I'm glad you solved the problem and helped others with your step by step report. I don't think I would have had the patience with that action. I would have put that barrel on a model 10 with stagger feed magazine a long time ago. Congrats!

It has the exact same staggerfeed mag as a 10 actually. Really there's only a few differences in the 2. The axis is just the more simple, less refined version. Almost like savage sat down and said ok what is the absolute least we can do to an action and it still function lol.

Unbelievable prices on 25gr 17 cal bullets. Folks are paying almost a DOLLAR apiece for 25gr and 30grs

This seems to be savages mantra post Coburn. Guessing it's carved somewhere on a plaque displayed prominently somewhere at savage hq.... glad you found a way to fix it.

I understand what you are saying but I guess I wasn't clear about what I am referring to. The older Savages with the 4.27 action screw spacing had a blind magazine called a stagger feed. There was a lot less problems with them in my experience. The Axis and the newer 10 short actions(blind or mag fed) are called center feed. The problem you encountered is a center feed. Savages terminology not mine.

Im quite fond of the design actually. Im 99% sure this entire issue is to blame on the boyds stock that was inletted too deep. I have 5 other savages that all feed fantastic. I dont like these 204/223 mags but all the rest work perfect. The 204/223 mags have a large plastic spacer at the rear that allows them to use the dame length mag body for all short actions. The issue is the center of the mag tension spring is not under the center of the follower so every now and then, you'll get a tip down where the spring tilted forward instead of level.
