160gr Matrix

Rich,
I really like the looks of your setup (high volume). I used a 1/4" steel plate with a hole tapered to match the angle of the nose, put the bullet up from underneath, with about the same amount sticking through to do the last 20 I have for this hunting season.
Is that a fire brick?

It's a ceramic brick that I use for bonding bullets. I could set it up to do 50 if I wanted to but started with ten.......rich
p.s. you can order from Corbins

Anybody shot a deer or an elk with this bullet yet? Looks like a pain to anneal. Necessary?? Bruce

Annealing is really pretty easy! My buddy shot a bear this spring with my 6.5 Sherman with an unannealed one and he didn't travel more than 20 yards shot through the lungs. I don't think you would have to anneal under 700 yards, give or take, but that is somewhat of an educated guess based on my testing.....Rich

Just shot some test loads with my 6.5 Sin and the 160gr Matrix. Groups looked okay with now development (~1" maybe a tad less) and velocity was great at 3550 average. I need to play with some seating depth and loads to get better groups but it looks good so far.

I did my first long range shooting with my 6.5 SS and 160 Matrix bullet today. I can only shoot 1/2 mile at my buddies place down the road, but was quite pleased with the results. I sighted in dead on at 100 yds. and had already calibrated the 6x24 SIII for error and found (zero)correction was needed. This was pretty much a first as most scopes have some kind of error. I used "CMANTHA's" .680 b.c. estimate and dialed up 17.5 minutes for the 880 yard shot. This was the first shot on target (lower finger) DSCF0829.jpg

Nice.

I took the kid out hunting yesterday and in the afternoon we did a little shooting. After re-zero to 100 we shot 1280 yards on a .75 MOA rock. My first shot was about .5 MOA low but horizontal was good. Next 2 shots were good on elevation and slightly right, but hitting edge of rock. I handed the rifle to the kid and he did almost the exact same thing.

When I shot the bullets through the chrono it was telling me 2700. Using that data and .700 BC, I was off .5 moa. Based on just reading .680 BC recommendation, and if I used that number, I would have dialed up .6 moa.

Is everyone using .680 now? If so, is there a better recommendation for the 140 Berger VLD? I am using factory G7 bc for that.

Good shooting Brent! .680 seems to be working for Cliff and I. I have found the 140 Berger VLD's to be pretty close with their estimates, although it seemed in my rifle that the b.c. dropped off somewhat after 800 yards......Rich

Thanks. I shot Saturday with Ami from 960, 1310, and 1500. I was doing OK at 1310 and 960, but left 1.5 MOA at 1500. Ugh

I have been wondering about that. I was thinking about how Sierra uses two BC numbers and if that is a good idea for Berger and the slower speeds of long range.

I have been shooting at all sorts of elevations, temps, and barometric pressures changes this past month and seen some interesting results. I wanted to try the matrix again now that I have some more experience under my belt. I tend to always come away being schooled by something or another.

Hello, I was wondering if you would please tell me about your 6.5 sin. I love the 6.5 calibers and currently shoot 2 different 260 Remingtons, both on savage actions, one with a Shilen barrel and one with a Mcgowen. I also have a Gunwerks built 6.5-284 and a Winchester model 70 in 264 win mag. I just ordered some 160 grain matrix bullets and Marshal said they would ship today. I want to try them in both the 6.5-284 and the 264 win mag.

When you say 3550 FPS from another 6.5 that intrigues me. Is this based on the 300 RUM case with a sharper shoulder like your 338 Sin? Thanks for your time

Brandon
