150 grain 3006...Who Shoots 150 Grainers?

I was torn between a .270 and .30 06. I decided on a .30 06 due to its bullet versatility and the fact an 06 can shoot a 150 grainer 3000 FPS which is pretty flat for whitetail.

Who shoots a 150 grain load for 06? I'm leaning on the Hornady SST for its BC and lethality in thin skinned game.

I have a box of Hornady 150 gr SST hust for whitetails. I dropped a Texas WT with a 308 Win and Nosler 168 gr BT at 50 yards. Hit it on the shoulder and not too much meat damaged surprisingly. A 165 AB abd 180 PT accounted for two more Oregon mulies. I have loaded 165 BT up to 3000 fps in the 30-06 using RL22. But I cannot remember the load.

This is an older post so I'm sure the OP got his answer, and I didn't read any other posts. I shoot 150 grain Remington corelokts in my 700 ADL .30-06. Very accurate in my rifle. I've shot pie plate steel targets, center of mass hits at 300 yards, and have killed several deer and hogs with it.

Since I don't reload I use OTC Hornady American Whitetail 150gr SP. I tried one box each of Remington Core-Lokt, Federal 150gr SP Power Shok and Winchester 150gr Super-X PowerPoint.

One X-Bolt, the FLD performs better with Hornady and the other X-Bolt, the Composite Stalker performs better with the Remington 150gr Core-Lokt. The Composite Stalker performs well with the Remington Core-Lokt 125gr SP.

The Composite Stalker is zeroed at 100 yards with the 125gr SP for hogs. I don't have any issue considering I've taken hogs with my Bushmaster out to 100 yards with .223 Hornady Frontier 55gr SP. For the hogs I usually get my shot between the eye and ear which drops them where they stand.

The .30-06 150grs lethal out to 400 to 450 yards, after that there isn't enough velocity for expansion.

These 150gr SP runs less than, pre-scamdemic, $21/box and the .223 Hornady Frontier $10/box. I don't believe or fall for the marketing campaign that a bullet with an engine on it @ $40/box performs better than a $21/box ammo for average distances of 400 yards or less.

I have yet to be disappointed with the performance of any of the above ammo.

As everyone knows it's all about shot placement.

I had many good times shooting Hornady .308 150 SST's with H414/W760, RL15, Varget, RS Big Game& RS Hunter. Velocities were all around 3,000 fps and on occasion I shot up to 600 yards with good results. I would like to try StaBall with 150's in the .30-06. Excessive recoil & heat for volume rodent shooting. Some time before, when shooting NRA Hi Power during the transition between .30-06 & .308 many .30-06 shooters used either 150 or 168 grain bullets with IMR4064 and this powder became some sort of a standard for the .30-06. WWII was partially won with 150 gr. (or real close) .30-06 loads.

150 grain bullets are noticeably lighter on recoil than the 178 grain ELD-X out of my lightweight Tikka T3x Superlite. I don't have a flinch and can follow through with the big 180 grain loads, but a medium charge in 150 grain load is much easier shooting.

IMR 4320 - sort of an orphan powder. Meters better than 4064. Yes, works great, as I can remember 50-53 grains 4320 but don't accept this without verification.

Of some interest - many of these powders were developed in the 30's - like real old.

I never got around to loading any but somewhere I have a box of Nosler E tip 150 grainers.

I am a great believer in 180 grain bullets for the 30/06 but there are times I like the idea of
being able to kill deer on the spot. A 150 grainer at 2900 striking velocity is more likely to do
that than a 180 grainer at 2500. My shots for this scenario will stay inside 200 yards.

Love the '06, I have two of them. Less than 150 yards, the 180 grain Remington round nose Korloch reigns supreme. Hornady superperformance SST 150s Will come apart and usually not exit on deer shorter than 100 yards out. Close range I have had 165 ballistic tips come apart. Have handloaded Winchester and Remington 150gr pointed, Will come apart at under 100 yards

My B 78 really likes fusion 150s, But due to the ammo shortage, the two boxes of Remington 165PSP May have to do Yeomans service this fall.

Mine likes the 155 Berger's.
