Grain twist barrel, whats that ?
A gain twist barrel is one that starts out at the breach with a slower twist and as the bullet
accelerates(Moves down the barrel) the twist rate gets faster.
Example breach end twist rate is 1 in 10. Muzzle end twist rate 1 in 8. I am not sure what the extreme limits of difference is but the ones that I have seen have been 2 to 4'' different from
one end to the other.
These gain twist barrels were for 4200 ft/sec + velocities and used where normal bullets would
not hold up to starting inertia.
I have a .22 WSSM with a 1 in 15 that shoots great at 4400+ft/sec without bullet damage. I still don't no how fast I can push a bullet in it before it starts to destroy them.(I reached 4500 ft/sec
and it did not shoot any better or worse so I settled for anything under 4500 ft/sec. this rifle would have been a good candidate for a gain twist barrel but I decided to go with the 1 in 15 instead.
