Same is true of the recoil lug on many Mausers. They are often a few thou wider at the bottom than the top. Can't see it easily with the naked eye but unless you dress the lug to be the same width at the bottom, it is enough to lock it in place.

Nope no mechanical lock with any of the Ruger 77 tang safety or the Ruger 77 Hawkeyes. What can cause a difficult issue to remove the action from the stock is a circular cut in the right side of the receiver that is about 1/4 inch in diameter and about 1/16 inch deep. Ask me how I know. I fill with with Play Doh before I do the bedding.

I opened a brand new Devcon steel putty and it was already hard. Someone on here mentioned the warm water. It worked perfectly.
