Looking to pick up a 20" Seekins PH3. Would be for Elk, deer, antelope. Outside if nostalgia , any reason to go .308? Hunting really max at 500, but would enjoy practicing much further. My other rifle is a chopped .270 win Fieldcraft. Thanks

Based solely on the barrel length you mentioned, I would go 308. 20" is a known sweet spot for 308 barrels as far as not giving up much in velocity. I've been watching lots of videos on this topic and many of the 6.5 CM rifle in 18 and 20" barrels are seeing velocities in the low 2500s, many in the mid 2400s. That's a 200± fps penalty for reducing the barrel length. That reduces the effective range, especially on elk, alot with the 6.5 CM.

P.S. I am a huge 6.5 CM fan, and have numerous shapes and sizes of them, but this application woukd be a no for me..

6.5 creedmore everyday.
That's what I use for almost all my hunting out to 650.

Loaded with the 123gr absolute hammer at 3100fps is a nice combo. Taken a decent amount of elk. Last year it took one big bull and a cow just over 600 yards
What is the barrel length of the 6.5 CM that you get that velo out of?

If I had a "chopped .270" 🤢 I'd go up a cartridge class for the elk. Mind blown looking at their website at the twist rates for the .308. If you have to have the 20'', and I don't blame you, the 1/8 6.5 PRC would be my choice. Long action 22'' and good twist it is the 7 RM that appeals to me even though .30 cal holes are better. If they put a 1/8 30 cal win mag/prc then those would be my huckleberry since I like the monos...
