Ruger MKII 243's ; school me on Ultralight 20" vs. Standard 22" barrels

I think people mistake 'stain-less' with 'stain-free.' All stainless steel will rust, given enough time and exposure, but stainless is more rust-resistant than chrome moly. Anyone who has a knife made from, say, 5160, will see the blade stain/darken over time... often within 20 to 30 minutes of use! Stainless won't do this, but depending on the type of stainless steel used, it may be more or less susceptible to rust. I have a can of silicone spray and use that along with a silicone cloth to wipe off all of my stainless rifles and haven't had a problem. If I were going to a constantly rainy area to hunt, I'd break out the paste wax, pull the action and bottom metal from the stock, and give everything a good polished wax job. Having grown up in the Gulf South surrounded by swamp and marsh, I also use RIG grease on all of my blued firearms.
Beeswax and Lanolin in my leather boot wax.....any good to coat rifle?

Was also planning to use it for bedding release agent

I find this all very interesting as rain, moisture, snow all unavoidable in most hunting regions!!!

I am leaning towards a blued rifle now, yes they rust easier, but steel is less likely to gall. So I figure bolt lugs, barrel threads, places the boot rides

Maybe swap over to one of the big name barrel manufacturers for high grade stainless if I ever do a caliber change

I've used Johnson paste wax for wood, shoe polish, Vaseline. Last one I used Hornady one shot case lube and worked fine just make sure coat everything 4-5coats.
I've got a tang safety 243win built in the 80's, that's a tack driver. I'll second everything said above about them. Bed the action, free float the barrel, Timney trigger/sear kit I used a knife sharpening stone polish the engagement area. Trigger breaks about 2lb, mag box floating I knew nothing about, learn something new every day. She shoots 95-100gr cup and cores well enough to shoot golf balls at 200yds. I can't begin to calculate round count on this barrel but if you don't heat them up bad they'll last a long time.
