Are the factory iron sights on the early tang safety Rugers In-The-Way to run a medium height scope????

I like the irons for backup

But got to thinking, A Varmint Scope, with a large bell; probably not going to work out???

But Idk never shouldered an iron sight Ruger of the sort, or handled one for that matter

Also wondering how MK I front sight is attached?

I see MK II front sight shroud advertised it slips over then is fastened somehow, wondering if they are similar or same mounting?? Screw?

I'm thinking this is why I see some rifles for sale, with no front sight insert (been removed)

Decisions, decisions

Yup. I have removed the front sight on a couple of rifles but I'm leaving the 77 alone. For one thing it's not as easy as say a Remington. I have not used my 77 RS on game but at 4 power or so it's not visible at all and it wouldn't be a distraction if I was drawing a bead on something. What is your M77 chambered in? I saw varmint scope mentioned so I'm thinking 22-250 or something similar…

I don't have a M77 yet

Would like to get my son into one as a rifle we can pass off together, he is my height now so he is ready for a "full sized rifle" I use SA calibers, so I'm thinking a 243 or 284 and run lighter bullets for reduced recoil.

Both chamberings are pretty potent for a beginner, I'm teaching him that he cannot underestimate the power and distance a center fire cartridge produces.

Either chambering we decide on, we will have a "reduced load" w light bullets; making this a small game getter, AND a medium-to-full power load to carry. Use some different bullets to identify rounds.

I like pistol caliber lever actions, but not really enough HP for deer.

I know the kid is pumped on coyote, rabbit, and grouse. All can be bagged with a loaded down bolt action centerfire cartridge. And keep a good load in pocket for deer.

He aint gonna go out on his own, but I'm going to get him setup with a lifetime one and done gun for a bolt action.

I'd really be excited to find a SA Ruger for an affordable price and rebarrel to 284win.
And if it was a 243 we could shoot that for 5 years and rebarrel.....recoil will be less.

I like tang safety guns, but was considering getting him a MKII because its safer to pass off.
I teach him a hammer gun and 3 position safety gun are GREAT rifles to be in a groups with. Others can look at each others rifle and see safe conditions.

Thumbing the hammer down takes skill and caution, but you gotta learn to be careful and pay attention!!!!!

If anyone reading has a 243 Ruger collecting dust think of us 😎

I also liked the manlichers, never tried one, but am worried about ranges of 150-200yds w that barrel length.

Thought irons were cool he would learn on them and have backup

I also think a 2x or 3x red dot is cool but there aint much for magnified red dots that are compact and affordable on my budget.

So it always comes back to use what we got. I got a 284win......its pretty nice though......begginer guns and something we pass off are going to get lots of nicks and dings which is OK, its making memories.....I don't want to start out w a show peice for that tho!!!!

Shotguns, yes, OK to learn on, and good to shoot flying birds

But every time I have a shotgun in my hand; my mind says I need my rifle that I don't have right now!!!

I seen it happen
Bird hunt
Big Buck Stands up

Lots of regrets 😂

I have hunted with a M77 mk 2 for 10 seasons and love them. They are great hunting rifles imo. This year I went with a Remington and it was great too. It's the confidence that you build by putting time behind the rifle and knowing your bullet/load.

Good luck with your quest and getting kids into the outdoors and hunting is awesome.
