Hello all. I'm looking to try some Berger bullets in my 308 win mainly for hunting white tail here in North Carolina but also for shooting paper/steel. I'm wanting to know what all people have used on game and how they performed? My shots are from say 10 yards to 300 where I'm able to hunt now and also looking to load some for my Father and he has shots from 10 yards to around 400 or so across cut grain fields. Here is what I have on hand.168 hybrid target,168 classic hunters,185 classic hunters and 210 vld-h. My rifle is a factory Remington 700 sps tactical with 20 inch barrel(hope to get rebarreled after season) and my Father's is a factory savage rifle with 22inch barrel. Any info and real world experience is greatly appreciated. Thank y'all God bless

Not the bullets in your stock, but I have been loading for a couple 308s in camp for MN whitetails with your same conditions. I am running 155VLDH over Varget and results have been very good. The guys have killed around 15 deer from 30 feet to a smidge over 300 yards with a couple of bears in the tally as well. The 155 has been a very efficient killer with nothing catastrophic from a meat loss standpoint and load development was very easy on a few different rifles. I would probably run the 168 classic hunters from your list and I would guess performance would be very similar.

I've lost one deer with bergers. It was dead, just never found it. In my experience, most have been 30 yards or less with a few truly drt. I am anal at this point making sure the tips are open, not clogged or bent. Couldn't come up with another reason that one deer had the strength to go so far as i thought it was a great shot and should of banged up the lungs good. It was a poke though at about 700. I use them with confidence. No I don't tend to see a bunch of pass throughs, I usually find them on the other side under the hide if at all, but I don't tend to look for them.

My brother and I shoot the 155g Bergers in several 308s. Varget, R#15 are hands down winners with Lever powder getting the nod on speed 2900 fps. We use Lapua brass. My brother has made some incredible kills at some distance on large hogs with the 155 vld hunting.

I have had incredible luck with a short range bullets in the 308 and 30/06, the Speer 165g BTSP, 150g Hornady flat base, Hornady 165 flat base and boat tails. The Hornady flat base in the two weights act like partitions.

I have a 14 twist 308 with a short leade where I shoot the 155g Berger VLD hunting into very tiny groups, R#15 and Lever powder is 2900fps at the accuracy node, approaching 3000 on this 26" barrel.

Call me lazy or just lucky but once I tried the 168 CH, I just bought a few boxes and stopped experimenting with the 308win. The 168 AMAX also performed very well on target. The CH with IMR 4064 or Varget met all my expectations for eastern whitetail hunting. Shoot them in the crease and go get the truck.

168's with Varget all day long. Start at 42 grains and work up. The Hybrids should be the easy button.
