Looking for pros and cons. Obviously there a big difference in price. I'm building a 6.5CM and want to build a gun that uses ACIS mags. Looking at MTD and others.

would it be for acis patterned mags or ar type? some will give you ~2.800-2.830" ish and other (larue and acs) 2.870". i only have acis in long action magnums. the only con i can think of is coal restriction lengths. if going acis, then go with xm/medium action if you're loading for heavies (140-156gr) to give more room for powder and seat boat-tail in the shoulder. hope this helps!
One aspect is plastic is definitely quieter depending upon your use.

If you are loading hammers or heavies, the AICS mags are available without the binder plate to allow for a longer COAL. Depends I guess on what twist your barrel is.

If the OAL criteria are met between the two, the plastic are quieter and smoother feeding. The super cold conditions the plastic don't shrink/constrict as much as metal.

AICS may be called a "standard" but every action and chassis/stock combination I've ever put together works differently with different manufacturers mags.
A Tikka that I had in a XLR chassis would not feed from any metal mags except MDT. But polymer mags fed great.
Another tikka that I had in a similar setup wouldn't run poly mags at all.
If you can, be sure to get a stock/chassis with and adjustable mag catch. Because they almost always need to be tweaked for height.
Otherwise you'll need to either file at the latch or file/dremel the mag.
Poly mags feed lips are usually very rigid. So if they feed well and you can adjust the height then they stay fairly reliable.
Metal mags are easier to tune the feed lips, but since they do bend they may take more care to not drop, and they may take more maintenance to re tune on occasion.
The only other thing I can really think of is that poly mags are chunkier for the same capacity.

Metal AICS mags will give you longer OAL if needed. You can buy them without the binder plate to get even longer but that also depends on the rifle being used as some factory rifles will need the feed ramp filed down to get them to be able to feed without the bullet tips catching. I still have my original AI AICS mags I bought in early 2004 when I switched to DBM for matches. They still run great. MDT also work well. I have them in 6mm ARC and .308/6.5 also. You can save a good amount on their Black Friday sale.
Poly mags will work fine also. I use the poly MDT mags in my .223.

You speak of competition matches, then comes the question, how many rounds you need to hunt big game? I say 1 round in good conditions, 2 rounds if needed to hasten the pace of the animal's death, and 3 if you are shooting distances beyond your ability.
That would be up to the person hunting. I am just trying to help him with mag choice.

He is building a 6.5 Creedmoor and no he is asking about magazines. I have seen people post here about shooting matches too and know a lot of people who do both. That said I was just giving him my experience with the magazines which will cross over to hunting as well. Maybe if you spend more than a month or two here you will learn that.
