338 for elk hunting- Build a lightweight rifle

That sounds like a real nice rifle.

Does the bolt face have to be altered, what brass is used? Approximately what velocities to expect with a 250 Barnes LRX? Inquiring minds! 😉 memtb
.532 boltface, std mag. diameter. Ive used Win. .375 mag. brass in the past but using 8mm mag brass now. Alot easier! A 250 Barnes should run high 2900's easily. Mine runs 2980 with no signs of pressure. I've been up to 3050 but got better accuracy right around 3000.

Thanks! A week or so back I was asking about something that had a bit more umph that a .338 WM ……using common, affordable brass and without major modifications. In our case……a Model 70 Winchester! memtb

I'd go with a .340 wea. Brass is easy, good velocity, fits in a std. mag. action. Best capabilities on a std. .375 size case. Mine is basically a .340 improved. A 250gr. TTSX at close to 3000fps will do very good things in the field. Plus, you can carry it yourself!
