Pleasant surprises with my old .270 winnie

Is that using 270 win brass or something else?

I have lots and lots of good .270 brass....one of the reasons I stick with it.

280 AI is very impressive for the amount of powder it burns, I can't help but think a .270 with the shoulders blown forward and sharper would be equally efficient.
Sorry, late getting back to you.
Yes, 270 win brass will work.

You ought to be a salesman because you are making me want to get my 270 out and give your load a try
This reminds me, I have to throw this disclaimer out there for anybody reading this- don't start with my load, or even try it! It's probably way too hot for your gun/ brass/ throat combo, as it is way above max.

As with any reloading, work up slowly from recommended minimum while looking for pressure signs and don't take joe-schmo's word for load data as a load you can use in your own rifle as conditions that affect pressure vary greatly between components like brass, rifles, temperature, seating depth etc.

I've been thinking about why I can get this much powder in the case without over pressure and need to list it here for the new reloader just in case they think they can copy what I did without working up from proper starting loads. You can't.

It just so happens my rifle has a really long throat, and a really long mag box to let me seat the bullets as long as I wish, which I do (I'm only seating the bullet .250" deep, measuring from the boat tail junction) which gives me WAY more volume in the case, which lowers my pressure vs seating the bullet deeper. The other thing that helps, is my brass is thinner than most, and that gives me extra case volume as well. My long bullet-ogive-to rifling lands jump also helps keep pressures down vs seating at the lands or close to it.

All that allows me to add more of a slow burning powder which gives me more total gas volume and therefore more velocity while keeping the pressure reasonable.

This would be way, way over pressure at normal bullet seating depths, or with different brass, different chamber, or with less bullet jump.

Wish I had put this disclaimer at the beginning of my post, but now I can't edit it.

150's are the heaviest I have on hand and will only use for the 270win. Being that said, I've seen the vv site change data over the last 5 years to a bad degree compared to other published data. I bought 560 for the 150's, but do have other options in vv to work.

I

Remember reading that he said the .270 wasn't worth ackley-izing, it was already too overbore- more powder wouldn't equal much more velocity with the powders available then (pressure limits).

This is not necessarily true today with the plethora of super slow burning powders. I will be doing an ackley version or possibly a Gibbs, before I get too old to care, just to be different.

I'm already a bit above most factory 7 mag loads.
I can tell you that a 270 built on 700 LA or clone that allows 3.67" max magazine with appropriate freebore will be virtually maxed out in top end performance. I really don't believe there will be any substantial gain with AI under this circumstance.

Since this thread is all over the place and the 270 Win afficionados are here, I'd like to jones for some load data using a 150gr Partition and RL23.

My nephew has a new Browning X-Bolt LR with a 7.5 twist 26" barrel, nice rifle but it has a SAAMI chamber so he can't load too long unless he has it throated. I'm at the lands at 2.735" I believe.

Did a little poking around after my post, and from what I'm seeing, the Sherman .270 wildcat (shoulder pushed forward and blown out) only nets *maybe* 100fps over what I'm doing now. In some cases it's not even that. That's alot of expense and trouble for 100fps or less. Ackley would be even less than that.

Still, slowing case growth and less trimming is always a bonus.

2.735 doesn't sound right. I'm at 3.578 with berger 170s. Case length is 2.540.

I don't have any personally verified info for you but there's lots and lots of data out there for 150's and saami COAL (or close to it).

Just one if the resources I use. It has at least one load with specifically what you asked for:

Definitely more to the Sherman designs than higher velocity.
The shorter and fatter cases SS and Max cases are easier to tune and keep there, and in his words "the efficient ones usually are."
