Ruger American cycling problems

Before grinding on the barrel face, I would try switching to the AICS magazine which is metal with tune able mag lips. They are compatible and without the binder plate allow long bullets to seat closer to the lands.
This is what I use in my 6.5 and 6 CM.

Or the Easy button is just to switch over to tipped hammers .

How much was it to order the metal AI conversion from Ruger? I have the 2 screws in the bottom action so I know it's doable!

In my case, there was no retrofit required. They were a direct fit. The magazines are a little pricey though. As I recall, they ran about $70 for a 10 round unit.
Your model may require a different bottom metal. Of course, as previously mentioned,
switching to tipped Hammers would be the
least cost option. I like to spend money on my firearms, so they both have aftermarket triggers. I tried the spring upgrade but didn't care for the feel. The Jard trigger assembly was a real game changer.

I really really don't like cheap firearms. I understand budgets and such. The last time I looked a a Ruger American rifle I believe used at Cabela's was under 250.00 are you planning to keep this gun?
Does anybody in the family actually like the gun? Is their any sentimental value placed on the gun? If any of those is a no don't do anything to the gun and sell it. And get something that will actually hold it's value.
To me a gun is an investment that should hold value not lose it. Go try to buy an old Martin set of auto body hammer's compared to a harbor freight set. And then ask why they cost 5-10 time's the original cost. Because they no longer make quality sheet metal hammer's, most cars are plastic. But once cry once and then be happy to see the value of quality over the long term.

I think he bought it when he was 18 as his first firearms purchase. He's killed a few bucks with it, but it doesn't hold any more sentimentality then that. I won't waste more than $20 or $30 bucks on it. I'm gonna go with tipped mono's and let it rip. Maybe next year or after we get rid of $7 gallons of milk and $5 gallons of gas we'll upgrade to a Seekins or a semi custom set up from the classifieds. For now, it's lean times in America and especially in California, so we have to watch every penny. I'm investing more in ammo in case things go real south after November. I think the components are more important than the firearm at this point. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I hear that 10-4, nothing wrong with using what you have. Just don't spend over what it's worth is all I'm saying.

For the record, I was never a Ruger fan but thought I would try their 6 CM. To my surprise, it easily delivered 1/2 MOA with factory ammo. For an inexpensive rifle it is impressive so I kept it. I own much more expensive firearms but had to work to get great accuracy from them. It certainly is adequate for a hunting/target rifle.

I have zero complaints for how the rifle shoots. Pretty cool the little groups this thing spits out with 143 eld-x or 140 eld-m. Right over 1/2 moa at 200 yds. Berger 135s are 0.44 at 100 yds and Accubonds will do about 1-5/8" at 200 yds. With the barrel cleaned it will shoot the 124 HH under MOA out to 400 yds with Rldr 16 and H4350. All very adequate for hunting big game. I see some Sako S20's on EuroOptic closeout just over a grand. I've always had good luck with Sako and Tikka's. We will prob go with a more quality firearm and sell this one after the season. I appreciate all the responses and helpfulness you guys put forth. I had no doubts I'd get some good feedback from this group.

The American rugers were allway good shooter's. And perfectly fine for using as a hammer to drive a nail. The problem with them is that's all they were is just a throw away tool. They will never hold value.
How many people that bought a colt python back in the 7O's
Are saying that was the worst money ever spent. Or the son that inherited Grandpa's ole pre 64 m70 super grade in 300 h&h saying he sure was stupid for paying that much money for it?
Do you think anybody that inherits a Ruger American is going to be looking up the value of it on a auction site?
Probably not but if it gets the job done then it's worth the value at the moment.

Don't grind the barrel out with a angle to help the round in. It works, but my 224 Valkyrie bolt gun bulges the brass near the base, some almost broke in that area.
