7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

I posted a pic earlier and it had the wrong data :-( Sorry about that. the shot group actually should have been .519, lol.

I went to the range and shot my 270 and it was .889 and i realized the other group was inaccurate.

First and foremost, Welcome to the Brotherhood. secondly, that is a **** nice group by any bodies standards. Winchesters are tough to beat, and I have become a Winchester fan myself of recent. I have a Custom Sharpshooter, in 7STW, and it is a drill.
Great looking rifle, and awesome groups. If she's consistent with that load, you are done with load development. Congrats.:D

I went back out to the range and she shot 2 rounds dang near on top of each other with 1 time fired brass so I put her aside as I didn't want to jinx myself, lol.

I know that this is not a .270 thread but here is what my .270 Winchester 70 did at the range today powder at 50.5 - speed at 2758 140 Nosler Accubonds. This rifle still needs bedding (it has a Bell and Carlsen Medalist stock) and needs serious trigger work as it still set to stock. I will fix this soon :)

Nice 270 group as well.
What powder and charge are you using in your stw. Just curious.

Does this sound right? 81 gr H1000 with Barnes 145 gr LRX @3280 fps? That is all I got out of it. My sons gun is a 7wsm shooting factory 150gr at 3220? Good accuracy though with .75" groups. I was really hoping for 3400+!

You need to ask yourself....why speed?

One valid answer is bullet drop. Less does help in the field. The other is bullet performance. Some bullets need speed to perform how you wish....others less so.

Thanks for reposting- the math was bugging me. Still a great group. Your horizontal spread is likely just your heartbeat.

What is the barrel length? I shoot a 24" barrel and I can't get the velocity from h1000, or rl25 that others on this forum have. I have better performance from 7828 in my rifle.

slow down to rl25 or retumbo if you want to crack 3300 fps. rl22 and h1000 are known to top out at 3300 fps give or take with 140-150 grain pills in many stw's. My dad's been shooting a near max load with rl22 and a 140 sierra in his 7stw for years and it's not over 3350, I think a bit less.

If you are looking for something between 3300-3400, the better options would be RL 22, 7828 with the 140-145 bullet. With a 140 TSX, and 79.3 - RL22' I am getting 3389, in one gun, and 3367 with nosler CT in another. Either one of those two are great powders for that weight, and desired speed. The H1000 will get you there, npbut you will need to burn more, and the muzze blast will be furious.

That's pretty good groups gun)
Barnes will be fine, Killed my first Elk with
the first Barnes bullets in the early days,
only bad thing about them was the copper
fouling.
My .338 will shoot half inch groups all day long
And my Custom .358 STA , the best I have shot
with it has been 3/8 of an inch.
I ordered two Barrels today 7mm 5R twist rate
of 1-8.75 and we will see how it does with the heavier
bullet weights. :D
