ZEISS Introduces The All-New Conquest V4 Family of Riflescopes

The Conquest V4 3-12x plex illuminated sounds like a great elk hunting scope for hunting here in Utah in the eastern High Unitas. Some short shots, some long range, all depends upon the specific terrain being traversed at the time.... which varies greatly

The V4's are made in Japan.

Why put illuminated reticles on the V4's but not the V6's?
I never used a 30mm tube scope, have used only one inch tubes. I some some old weaver scopes that were made in Japan. I think the new one's are made in the Phillippines. I never used an illuminated reticles on a scope either. My Japan made Weavers are very good scopes. I do have some old Zeiss bino's that are still clear, but they are heavy.

looks like they have gone back to the old Conquest MC with a 30mm tube. The old MC had a huge apparent field of view whereas the HD5 has a noticeable tunnel view. I've looked through their new V6 and it has a narrow tunnel view as well, so wont be buying another HD5 or 6, but might look at a V4

Which V6 did you look at? I think your assessment that the Conquest MC has a better field of view than the V6 may be a bit subjective. If you're looking through the V6 at 30x you're going to have less field of view than if you look at through the MC at 20x. This is more a function of having higher magnification than the V6 having tunnel vision. For comparison, here is field of view at 100 yards at max power for some of the MCs, V4s and V6s.

V4 4-16x44: 7.1ft
V4 6-24x50: 4.8ft
V6 3-18x50: 6.8ft
V6 5-30x50: 3.9ft
MC 4.5-14x44: 8.4ft
MC 6.5-20x50: 5.7ft

I decided to pick up a V4 6-24x50 and do a full comparison to my HD5 5-25x50. I wanted to make sure I wasn't sacrificing on glass quality by making the switch. I'll try not to duplicate points noted in Tim King's review. I did the comparison at dusk on 24 power.

Glass: I set both scopes looking into a shadowed area under some trees at 300 yards. Weather was clear. Clarity was basically the same across the field of view. The color seemed to be a bit more true in the HD5. The parallax adjustments seemed to be easier to achieve with the HD5. The direction of rotation of the parallax knobs are reversed between the two models. Scopes started to see a diminish in lighting exactly at dusk. 10 minutes after, they seemed to loose a bit more light but had more than enough to see clearly. I stopped the test 15 min after dusk. I think it would be safe to say that on a cloudy day, you could easily see until dusk at 24 power. Both scopes were equal in this respect. Overall, I would score the HD5 glass a 9.5/10 and the V4 an 9.4/10.

Turrets: The HD5 turrets have a positive click feel and sound. The V4 feels and sounds much softer in comparison. There is no slop or over travel in setting its position. Windage knob is ultra basic. Small with tightly spaced hash marks marked on one half of the knob. Clicks are more audible than the elevation knob. The windage knob has the quick reset-to-zero feature by pulling out and twisting. With the MOA1 reticle, I don't plan on dialing for wind much.

Overall, I would give a very slight edge to the HD5 as far as comfort and performance. Even though the V4 is 1" longer, it is noticeably lighter. The main selling points to the V4, as I see them, are the larger adjustment ranges, MOA style reticle, multi turn zero stop, and weight. Some sacrifices were made such as not having a full sized windage turret, lose of the 5x zoom, and glass that may not be quite as good.

Update to my last post. I shot the HD5 and the V4 side by side this weekend. The clarity and seeing through the heat waves was noticeably better with the HD5 than the V4.
