If I were to start over, I'd get a Tikka in 6CM. Buy an XLR Element Chassis. That thing can get a very short LOP.

It is something that they will NEVER outgrow.

Plus Dad can shoot it!

When my son was young, I thought he needs a youth rifle. So I got him a 457 scout and then a 527 Youth. He VERY quickly outgrew the scout stock. He actually never even fired the 527, so it got sold.

He also got sentimental about his first rifle, so that kept me from pulling the action and putting it in a chassis.

For his next rifle, I immediately put it in and XLR Element 3.0. He is still shooting that same rifle even after many growth spurts and being taller than me.

Yep, at about 8.5 ft/lbs of recoil and very low muzzle blast it is a very pleasant and accurate round to shoot. Plus it's a platform that you can use for the rest of your life.

There are some nice offerings for youth these days but kids can outgrow them quickly. Not only that, some of the youth guns are very light and have quite a bit of felt recoil even in smaller calibers. My cousin just ran into this with a little Mossberg he bought for his son in 243. It was very light and the recoil was sharp enough that his son would not shoot it. The Grendel in an AR platform however is a creampuff to shoot. I've never seen a kid shy away from one due to recoil and have had some shooting one as early as age 5. My brother and I each have a spare that we will loan out to friends for their kids to use. It works.
