So you are saying no kid under 10 should be allowed to hunt deer. That's wrong!!! ....
Grandson turning 12 but expected to grow another foot. Will look at all options. Thanks.
Not just great for kids and women. My wife uses one but I borrow it from time-to-time because it is light weight, has very little recoil, accurate as all get out and easily takes deer out to 400 yards. Same goes for 6.5CMThe 7mm-08 has tons of supporters..for good reason...it is a stellar caliber for kids and women...the 243 is amazing as well and that was my first caliber center fire rifle from my Great Grandfather. I now own a few different guns but one I've really grown fond of with light recoil is the .260 Remington. It was mentioned but i don't think it has had enough attention. It is incredible and pounds deer...I've shot a cow elk with it as well and hand loading for it is easy...Those who think ammo availability is not there might not shop very often...even in the .260 federal is loading the sierra gamekings which cause of their ogive are very forgiving to seating depth and are an amazing animal dropper. There are so many ammo options out there now and all the cailbers mentioned are pretty easy to find at basspro shops or sportsmans warehouses around the country....if you don't have one scheels has good ammo options as well...I think all these calibers are fantastic but the .260 offers great options if they grow or get into reloading...Have fun, he will love whatever you get him.
Good points, though the same rifle worked fine for my son to take his first ~120 lb feral pig with ~110 gr Nosler partition bullets. Though most members of this forum may not be that restricted on what they can afford to spend, the H&R kit is an affordable option for those who are, >>IF<< it fits their son/daughter well. But there are many better options suggests in this thread if you can afford it. I couldn't at the time.
- Gun fit is paramount. It helps manage recoil and the ability to see through the scope easily. I made the mistake of buying my son the H&R rifle for his first one and neither of us could shoot it well because it wasn't comfortable to shoot. It might be for some kids, but not for either of us, and he wasn't that big at the time. I was 6'3", 225#, and I didn't like shooting it at all. Turned out the geometry was all wrong and amplified the perceived recoil. Limbsaver pad helped some here, but it still felt wrong for both of us. In spite of that, he took his first deer on his first hunt with perfect shot placement.
