Yet another "What cartridge?" thread

280AI or 7-08 all day long. The 7mm bullets do extremely well in the distance and game your after. Mountain terrain, steep angles, changing winds, along with your physical and mental abilities will effect your results. I'm an old Jarhead Recon Marine and disabled Vietnam Combat Veteran. At 73 years of age I hunt with men allot younger than I am. I've seen the expensive gear they bring to the hunt. The results generally turnout that it's harder than they thought. They failed to consider that their goals were greater than their abilities.
When I go out of state to hunt the first thing I do is check out the local shops for the ammo they carry. Surprise few if any that have been mentioned are on the shelves.
I reload and take more than enough ammo.
Note: My self protection sidearm is a 45ACP 1911, with a 10 rd mag. along with 6 more 10rd mags as insurance.
Buy what floats your boat and shoot it allot.

Anyway, I just picked up a Tikka action(standard bolt face) to use for a build. I know exactly how I want to set it up, but I am not sure what caliber I should go with. I already have a 6.5 creedmoor, 30-06, and 300winmag hunting rifles. I plan on building this to be a shorter barrel (22"), medium sized game (mule deer and antelope), and I'd like it to be a nice blend between light weight but still comfortable to be shot out far (goal is to be effective on game out to 800yards). I have always wanted a 6.5x284, but now that I have my 6.5 creedmoor, I was thinking along the lines of a 270win or a 280AI.

I plan on doing a Manners MCS-T stock, a 22" carbon barrel, and a swarovski x5 scope. I plan on suppressing it too, which is why I want a shorter barrel.

What cartridge am I searching for??

I would build the 280 AI or 6.5 AI. You'll be happy with either.

Again, 284 or 6.5x284 will suit your needs nicely with the tikka standard bolt face and long action. Get an 8 twist on either. A 30-06 length case will quickly be problematic with the tikka mags, as bullets get longer and longer.

I would build a 7-08 shooting 162 grain to 168 grain Bullet. That would be a great low recoil 800 yards rifle.

Nice to see a couple of you guys bring up the 7 x 57, a great cartridge. Just sad to say that in today's world it is a reloader only cartridge. When and if you could find factory ammo it will be loaded at SAMMI specs at around 51000 psi for the older Mauser rifles and the like. Bring those specs up to modern rifles and it will out perform the 7-08. The case, if I remember, is actually .020 longer than the 7-08.

You are absolutely right what you are saying, but you can at least find two major German manufacturers, RWS and /or Brenneke pluss Swedish Norma, which are loading accordingly to CIP - data and are outperforming SAAMI - loads all day long.

7x57 and 6,5x57 are the "longer" standard bolt face cases I will run in tikka magazines.

260rem and 7-08 will fit your bill also.

My very best choice for your situation will be a straight 284winchester. You can ream the chamber to maximize potential with your desired bullet.

Maybe some minor adjustments to the feeding lips for the rebated case to feed properly.

280 man I almost went to it but got 6.5-28

I'm a .270 Win fan . Great cartridge for a light bolt action rifle, perfect for Deer and Antelope. Depending on the rate of twist you order in your new barrel, you can shoot the classic 130 grain ,which is explosive on whitetails ;the 140 Grain, and the long slim 150 grain Nosler Accubond LR, with an excellent BC . I'm not saying anything against any of the new family of 6.5mm cartridges. I'm sure they are all fine , it just seems to me they do not offer anything the .270 Win hasn't offered for decades. Very easy to make accurate hand loads . I still use H4831 /4831SC or IMR 4350. Getting a 130 grn. Nosler Ballistic tip to 3050fps from a 24 inch barrel out of my Weatherby Ultralight for several years , has been my ideal whitetail load. The .270 Win is really just a classic hunting cartridge. I think you can probably get some of the 6.5 cartridges to become good hunting cartridges too.

10 years ago I found myself with a long action with a .473" bolt face. Turned it into a 6.5-06AI and it has proven itself to be a winner. Fire-forming .25-06 brass is no big deal as the fire-form loads are amazingly accurate. Loaded up 50 more yesterday. It runs neck and neck with a .264WM.

Now I have a long-action with a .512" bolt head. Torn between 6.5PRC, .264 WM, 26 Nosler and 28 Nosler. The Nosler cartridges burn more powder and generate more recoil than I really want, so they are likely to go by the wayside. Probable winner is the 6.5 PRC as it is more modest in powder consumption and recoil and will do everything I need inside 600 yards for game. The .264 WM would probably be the winner but in the long run I think the PRC brass will be less expensive and more available. The PRC's shorter case will allow me to seat bullets further out.
