I wonder where you got your info from. There wasn't any 3 shot m-16 in Vietnam that every saw. I don't even think I would want one anyway. i can just see it. Trying to open up and 3 shots you stopped. have to depresss the trigger again.

Never had or seen or heard of M16AI with a selector switch for (3) shot while I was in the Marines. The Marines changed to the M-16A2 in 1983 with a 3 shot selector, and the Army in 1986. The official story was for better fire control. However, the real story is for ammo consumption. There was a study after VN and it was determined that 56,000 rounds were fired to take one enemy. We lost 56,000 Service People in VN and it took us 56,000 rifle rounds to kill one NVA/Viet Cong

Our training "PITS" in the Marines. The deck was sloped to the rear and had a 8-10" pipe hole probably 18" deep "Grenade Sump". This was in case the recruit dropped the grenade it would hopefully roll or be kicked by the instructor into the hole and blow up there. Would save the lives of the instructor and recruit, but the recruit would most likely get a real a** whooping.

A field manual correctly dug foxhole should have a grenade sump on each end.

Something from the past with Manuals. If i was ever in the need for a "Fox Hole" it was a depression in the ground behind a log or object. I don't think the modern Marine, Army, Air Navy do not even issue and "E-Tool" or train to dig a Foxhole. If setting up an Outpost they may build bunkers with sandbags.

Easier building with filled bags than digging a hole. My era was when we were preparing for the Warsaw Pact Commies to flood through the Fulda Gap. A tank war in the European forests and not a desert war in the middle east.

I never was shot at nor did I have to shoot at an enemy. We trained on building fighting positions slowly. First a little depression, then scrape it out deeper, keep improving the position.

I still often think of that in my day to day life. How can I improve my position. I don't need an armpit deep foxhole with overhead cover but I can redo my kitchen. I have a couple of bathrooms that need some work and I could use insulation in the garage and more organization. I don't always listen to myself but I know I could improve my position.
