With the rem 700 no longer being made what your action of choice for your long range rifle ?

I personally think that the Weatherby Vanguard action will fill a less expensive long range rifle build.
Now, if I want a more expensive action, then probably go with a Weatherby MKV action, or just buy a brand new Weatherby of either action, and have them blue printed. Weatherby guarantees their new rifles to shoot .99 or less now at 100 yds, with premium ammo. I'm a handloader, and can get better than that, with one of their new rifles.

Personal preference here, but I just can't go the 3 lug or multiple lug route.
It has to have a 2 lug system for me to be comfortable with the build/truing etc.
I want to delve into the custom action sector, but the cost here is so prohibitive, customers so far have balked at the cost and I feel bad cuz I have to make money on top of that. Even tactical bolt knobs here are ridiculous in price.
A Rem 700 Sendero II here is now RRP $2950. WTH!!
An LR is still a good donor at $1600, but those prices will soon rise too.

I cannot win.

none of bighorns actions are cheap proof builds all there high end switch barrels of of them priced up to 6 grand guns

You may want to look back. I was talking about the bergara "premier" actions

Tikka, American rifle co mausingfield or Archimedes, Impact, probably best 4 actions you can buy using the traditional Remington 700 footprint and compatible parts, triggers etc. edit minus the tikka, not rem compatible. Realized that after I posted this. But all great actions.

I reading a lot of people dogging the Remington 700 action. I have two Surgeon receivers. one in 308 and one in 338 edge. Both are great rifle and the receivers were bought before they were moved to AZ. I do hoard Rem 700 receivers because they are a great platform to build a budget custom rifle. I have built several rifles for myself including 260 Rem IMP, 6MM Norma Dasher, 224 Valkyrie, 6.5-284, 260 Rem, 300 WM and 6-284. I do replace all the bolts and blue print the receivers (I own a Lathe and Mill). Cut my own chambers and threading. On the bolts. I open the receivers up to .705 and order one piece bolts from PT&G at .703.. Then I lap the bolt to the receiver. I also install side bolt release Yes this is a lot of work but I feel my blueprinted Remington's shoot just as good or better than some full custom rifles. They hang with my Surgeons all day long.

Nice your able to do all that work yourself, that's awesome. I'm unable, so from a cost perspective some of the customs are just more budget friendly for me. Ie the Mackbrothers at $575 and also the Defiance Tenacity which I was able to buy at $775, both come with 20 MOA rails also.

yes that is what I tell everyone buy a part a moth or when you have the exter cash and when everything is in put it together and go shooting

Not many stock options for the Ruger M77 tang safety actions, nor base/rings for that matter. My preference is for the good ole Winchester M70 with claw extractor/CRF. Not as many options available for the Win as there are for the Rem and it's clones, or barrel swaps as in the Savage/Remage ... just something about that controlled round feed I love for a hunting rifle.

Yes and I'm comparing it the 700 action of today with serial # prefix RR which is about all of them. They're quality has suffered tremendously. The 700 Primary extraction is terrible and the trueness of the action is horrible. I just spent a few hundred dollars having the PE corrected and learned my lesson. As well as having to bed the scope rail because the front scope mount area of the action is so far off from the rear, over a 1/16th of an inch which created torque on a scope or rail.

Yes their quality control has gone down a lot. Maybe they could have put out less and but had better quality. I have several and some are okay and others are good. I have a 7mm mag that can consistently hit 1/2" with several hand loads and a 280rem that can cut quarter inch holes and easily consistent 1/2". I agree their quality isn't what it should be and if I could afford to send them all off to the smith I certainly would.

I never did have many rem 700 rifles but they were always super smooth untill they made the super cheap sps ones .I don't like savage actions even though I own two of them in 260 rem that are super accurate .The win model 70 is about out too because of cost .There is not much left in the way of factory actions .I am going to the good old ruger tang safety action for my next rifle a custom 260 rem with a ligilia barrel .The Browning a bolt is another choice but you never see anyone build rifles with them .

If you don't mind, I have to ask why? My first bolt rifle was a Savage 10 in .308. A very accurate rifle after torqueing the action in the stock.

I own a few Savage rifles, and I'm always mystified when people talk about those actions in a favorable light. The barrels make rifles shoot well, and while a problem with an action can effect accuracy, most of these rifles mentioned here (rem 700, Savage, etc) will outshoot most shooters, a close inspection would prove that the actions fit up terribly. So, having said that, I don't know why anyone would willingly build a rifle on a Savage action that feels like bouncing down a dirt road on a little red wagon with 2 wheels missing, in a hail storm. They just feel like the word "slop" was created because someone didn't know how to describe the sensation of cycling them..

Remington lost me as a customer in the mid 90's when I sold firearms. I'm know all manufacturers have ups and downs but the stuff I saw brand new out of the box was absolutely ridiculous. We would get a shipment of rifles, open boxes and three in a row had to go back to the factory. I'm talking rear sights mounted a 1 o'clock on the barrel while the front sight was centered. Two in a row in fact. Bolts falling out of the action once installed, fairly common I'm told. Ray Charles in the QC department would have caught this stuff. To me it reminds me of the big 3 car manufacturers in the 70's just living off their reputations. Eventually their reputation became crap product and someone else stepped up and came to market with better value and performance. Tikka, Howa/Vangard, Kimber and yes even Savage and others came to market with better value and or performance. More recently in the last 5-6 years, my buddy had to send a 700 back twice to get the chamber opened up to accept factory ammo. It's still tight but it at least it works. Too many solid options to give them any of my money. I'll get off my soap box now....

I went this route but with a Bighorn TL3. Purchased action and stock from Altus, had them in my hand a week later. Already had a savage style prefit. Toss in triggertech and boom, rifle assembled.

Depends the price point. If you go up from the 700 you could get a bighorn action. For a custom, they're pretty affordable.

however for building a cheap gun off of a factory action, I think it's the Howa 1500.
