Private property during rut.
Guided? If so, ask your guide as to what you can expect to see of either species. Either way you'll have a blast! What county are you going to?

No. We are hunting block management propertiesDoes the property have both species?
Then whichever species is on the BMA, is what you go after.No. We are hunting block management properties
We have 22000 acres under lease on the Pecos over by Sheffield, not too far from Iraan. We do have both species, but my observation is that the whitetails will dominate and run the mule deer out. The whitetails seem a lot more competitive for browse, grazing, food sources, etc.I'm fortunate enough too have my own place here in Iraan Tx by the Pecos river and we have both Species. It used too be a 50 -50 split but now we seem too have more whitetail ,mule deer don't tolerate activity on a piece of property as much as whitetail . Here in Tx it seems too take 7yrs too get a mule deer too it's potential most hunters are not that patient and that could be another reason we have more whitetail deer , hunting pressure
I wish they would label the whitetails as the invasive species that they are and allow hunting them with no tags, season or limits here. Mule deer are struggling as it is.We have 22000 acres under lease on the Pecos over by Sheffield, not too far from Iraan. And as wide open as that country is, I believe the mulies who like to lie up on the sides of the caprock are more exposed and vulnerable to hunting pressure. The whitetails use the deep canyons, and thick cover more. Just what I have seen. Wish we had more mulies.
I live and hunt in Montana. If you are interested in strictly a "western" hunt and have been lucky enough to get drawn, which is getting harder and harder to do, I would suggest mule deer while you have the chance. Sounds like you might already have a place to hunt, and that's always good, but you might also check out the Block Management program (over 6 million acres of ranch land are enrolled). Whichever you decide to hunt, I strongly suggest coming out during the rut - last two weeks of November. Let me know if have any more questions, and good luck!Last year I got to hunt Whitetail does in Montana, and had the time of my life. This year I got a Buck tag and it is good for either a Whitetail or Muley. I have only ever hunted Blacktails. What would you perfer to hunt? The area we are going has both but completely different properties and terrain. Any feedback is appreciated.
