Which weapon/caliber should i go with?

I see! i didnt find any extended box magazines to fit the vanguard. I think i will just go with a single shot 300 ultra mag.
I had planned on using the 210 bergers and 185 bergers.
i had interresting results with the ballistic calculator with these two bullets:
26" barrel, best average velocities i could find, 200 yard zero, 1.5 sight height, same conditions -|- 10mph wind
210 berger @ 3025FPS, .631 BC:
muzzle energy(ft/lb): 4267
1000 yard muzzle velocity(fps):1709
1000 yard come-up (moa): 22.4
1000 yard drift (moa): 5.54
1000 yard energy(ft/lb): 1362
185 berger @ 3314FPS, .549 BC:
muzzle energy: 4511
1000 yard muzzle velocity(fps): 1743
1000 yard come-up (moa): 19.7
1000 yard drift (moa): 5.82
1000 yard energy(ft/lb):1248

are my average velocities screwed up? to me it seems like the 185 would be the best choice. granted i know that i might end up with an accuracy node slower for the 185 and faster for the 210... then that would change my thoughts.. but for a generalization, it seems like the two bullets are nearly the same except for the 185 shooting significantly flatter.

now 1000+ yards is a different story, but i dont plan to shoot that far!

My 300 RUM, 26" barrel Sendero, shoots 210 Bergers @ 3150 with Retumbo. 3150 is a common velocity attained shooting the 210 Bergers out of a RUM.

A 300 RUM is also capable of shooting 180 bullets about 3350-3400. Mine shoots 180 E-Tips @ 3400 with Retumbo and they have been my go to load.

Wow that much more than what I had expected. Would you suggest I try retumbo as a starting powder?

Yes. The conventional wisdom says Retumbo is the go-to powder for the 300RUM. Picking up my 300RUM tomorrow and have 8lbs of Retumbo. Barrel break-in starts immediately!

Yes, Retumbo is a slow burning and fairly stable powder which is good for heavy bullets for cartridge, like the 210's in the 300 RUM. When you go lighter bullets, H1000 which is a little faster sometimes does better, but there are a lot variables from rifle to rifle and load to load. There are also some other powders that work well in the 300 RUM, but Retumbo is probably the most popular, especially for 200 gr bullets and up. I don't think you can go wrong with Retumbo and 210 Bergers in a 300 RUM.

My 300 RUM shoots the 208 Amax 3220 fps with great accuracy and that is the load I used to take my deer over a 1000 yards this year and antelope over 900. I shoot the 190 bergers at 3350 fps and they are a better choice than the 185's. Basically the same velocity with a greater BC. Basically you are going to top out at 3450 with the 180's, 3350 with the 190's and 3250 with the 200's. That is out of my 28" barrels. I use H870 because I still have it. After that is gone I will probably use Retumbo.

It's my 300RUM I picked up this weekend from Kevin at Montour County Rifles. Initial barrel break-in is done. Ran all shots over a chronograph and it looks like 3100fps with 208Amax and 210VLD is in the realm of possibility.

Sorry for the low-quality pic. Will get some better pics done soon and will start a dedicated thread for the rifle.

Nice Rifle! You are really going to enjoy the 300 RUM. I am confident you will find a nice accuracy load in the 3100's. Mine shoot extremely well in that range with different powders. But while I have H-870 I am getting tops with it.

I am sorry, maybe this is out of line, if so I apologize now. When I think of weapons I am thinking M-4s(Military issue), Glocks, Daggers and Nunchucks. Rifles are Rifles, and that one was pretty sexy by the way.
