Hi everyone,
Thanks for your help.

I recently purchased a Savage 111 lrh in 7 rem mag and am now trying to decide on my scope of choice. This will be my first long range set up. I don't have a lot of money to spend on it so I was looking at the Leupold VX-3's and VX-3L's. I know that it's good to have the scope mounted as close to the rifle as possible (...or, at least, I know that I've heard that it's the best option).

So, question #1 is: Is it really worth having the option of mounting the scope that close to the gun?

I do like the ease of the Greybull scope's (which are really nice VX-3's) turrets with 1/3MOA clicks and the windage built in, but I'm not necessarily convinced, at this point, that it's worth $1200 or whatever it is (plus $100 for each extra turret).

Also, I'm interested in the Leupold Gold Ring Spotting Scopes. Has anyone out there been able to examine the difference between the regular 12-40x60 and the 12-40x60HD? Question #2: Do you get $200 worth of difference to justify jumping up to the HD version?

Thanks again, I'll probably value most of your opinions and insights :)

I would go with the 6X20X40 VX-3 LR using burris signature rings. If you Send it in and get the mark 4 turret it costs about a $100.00 and is 1/4 moa you can find the scope for about $750.00 so your only in it about $850.00 for the same basic set up you get from greybull. Another good choice if your on a budget is the vortex 6X20X44 you can get them for $400.00 the glass is better in the vx-3 but the vortex will work well out to 1000 yds.

opinions are like butts everybodys got one

Jeffro,

did you get custom turrets installed? If not, are the regular ones pretty nice? What types of distances have you shot?

I have the factory turrets. Fine duplex. They work just fine. I will never get a scope with a load spec. turret. IE: with the yardage on the turret. I shoot out to 1000yrds on a regular basis.

Yea, i saw this guy put one right in the 4" bullseye at 1000 yards with his VX3 although, it was going sideways...

I have a Leupold12-40x60 HD and love it. It is small enough to carry in any pack and not use too much space/weight. I did purchase a manfrotto tripod for it, but the factory one has worked flawless for 4+seasons, just wanted a taller one.
