4 years ago, I wonder what he went with?
280 AII have a Remington 700 long action with a bolt face for a 3006 and it is the drop floorplate type action for the internal magazine. What are some other cartridge options for this rifle with no modification other than the barrel swap of course? This would be hunting out to 400 yards (deer with a very occasional black bear) and target shooting out to 600 yards. I wish to keep relatively light weight so the barrel will be a sporter or magnum sporter type contour. I would like to keep the barrel to 24 inches max. I will put a brake on it if it is anything more than say a 7mm08 haha as I do not care for recoil lol. Open to all suggestions! As an FYI I do reload so outside the norm cartridges are ok. I currently shoot a 6.5creed, 6.5 prc (my love at the moment haha), 7mm08, 7mm rem mag and a 28nosler. I am trying to avoid hyper barrel burners like the 28nosler but I am ok with slight barrel burners like the traditional 300 win mag or 7mm rem mag. Thanks!
I have a 6mm/280AI built with a 30" barrel on it. Having a 25/280AI being built presently. The only thing I am short is my reloading shack completed. Just about their with it. Presently setting up storage racks, and shelving. It going slow as I have to figure out what and how to store it or mount it. I am using InLine system to R & R my equipment. Having to think my way through it. I know that won't get me to far.First of all, there are VERY few aftermarket long actions with .473 bolt face available for purchase. That's the one that's ALWAYS out of stock. It's an 8-month wait after placing your order direct OR using a factory 700 or similar action, like the Wby 307 clone. I've seen one or 2 available, but you'd better know you can get a stock inlet for whatever you pick out/purchase. Having said that, MY picks would be one of the Wby RPMs, a .240 Wby, a .270 Winchester with 27" barrel or more with 7.5 - 8" twist, OR the wildcat I designed almost 2 years ago with Manson Precision that's essentially a .280 AI necked up to .30 cal. I call it the .30-'23 (a modern take on the .30-06 reinvented. It will hold a couple more grains than a .30-06 AI and requires no fire forming. It was given the freebore associated with the parent .280 AI to run bullets up to say 200 grains a little more efficiently.
But that's me. NOBODY does a standard .280 Remington anymore. That would be nice to see, if not too mundane for the builder. 6mm Remington with extended throat? .257 Rob, 6.5x55, or 7x57 with extended throats? Not me, but an Ackley version of any of these? 8mm- or .338-06, or even .35 Whelen? .35 Whelen AI is almost worth even me doing it for the level of power it gives. I don't really have a use for that much power in my corner if the world, but somebody might. For even more funzies, maybe a .400 Whelen. One could go the opposite direction I did and reduce the neck of the. 280 AI to .27, .26, or even .25 cal and have a dandy improved wildcat. Lots of cool possibilities that provide great performance without breaking the shoulder.
Very nice! You can probably run a solid 300 - 350ft/s faster than advertised standard .25-06 with a barrel of 26" or more with the .25 version. I NEED a loading facility. My area is too cramped to turn around in with all my junk in there.I have a 6mm/280AI built with a 30" barrel on it. Having a 25/280AI being built presently. I know what yoru mean. I am in an 8'x12' shack now. Beginning to feel I should have make it a little longer. I have and outside area for annealing and making bullet if needed. I still planning on my powder storage area in there too. I may have to do something different.Very nice!
